I wanted to check in at that hostel upon a friend's recommendation, when I arrived there as a complete stranger (with no former reservation might I add) the woman at the reception was very welcoming and although she told me they were out of rooms to rent for the next few days, she took my reservation on the spot and recommended another hostel just down the street for me to stay at in the meantime. A few days later, I eventually got to check in and get myself a private room. I did have to carry my 20 kg luggage upstairs myself both times, but it was the last thing on my mind really, this is a hostel, not a luxury place.
The fact that the only shower in the building was next to the common room / kitchen bothered me, because the other guests in the building at the time were loud and constantly partying there and I really didn't want to meet them, so I mostly used the sink in my room to wash myself for a few days - very uncomfortable. Bathroom was clean for the most part and I liked the decoration with a lot of old vinyls and vintage flyers on the walls - apparently they change it up every once in a while, my friend who had originally recommended that place to me later told me there used to be comic book covers instead when he was staying there - whatever. My bed was a metallic bunk bed (in a single room) and was comfortable enough, with several blankets. Wifi had its ups and downs but was reliable for the most part. Overall the other reviewer who described the place as 'similar to your cousin's dirty party house' pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as the overall vibe goes. Not a place to stay at with family, but for a solo traveller it is good enough.
The staff was arranging again when I left because I ended up having to check out one day earlier than I was originally supposed to and they gave me money back in cash right away even though I only warned them at the very last minute, which could have been troublesome somewhere else. Also the location is ideal, really close to Powell St. and its many amenities (restaurants, shops, subway, BART). Of course this is close to Jones street and the tenderloin so don't go and mess around with people there, especially at night, and watch your belongings - but the hostel itself is quite safe, you really shouldn't get in trouble while staying there.
