“Great Food and Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

Went to this restaurant and was a little worried because there was only one other family dining. However, I'm very glad that I stayed. The lamb shank and spanakopita were excellent. The lamb shank was "fall off the bone" tender and well spiced (not so overly spiced so that you can't taste the lamb).
The waitress (she was the daughter of the owner) was excellent and offered a wine selection that was off the menu. It was a sweet white (a Greek Muscato) that was fabulous. I'm really not familiar with Greek wine, but the waitress provided an excellent recommendation.
The service was fabulous and interesting.
I would recommend Estia's to anyone looking for great Greek food, generous portions, and not expensive.

“A North Beach Secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Columbus Avenue and the blocks surrounding it are known more for Italian than any other food. However, right next to Caffe Viva (Italian) is Estia, one of the few high-quality non-Italian restaurants in the neighborhood. The white walls, pictures and music give it a Greek atmosphere, and the owners' being from Zakynthos give it authenticity.

I have had the fava, saganaki, tyrokafteri, spanokorizo, gigandes and salmon - all were excellent! (I haven't come across this style of fava, other than in Greece.) The Greek-style caffe and tea are fantastic. It's possible to order dessert off the Caffee Viva menu too. And a good wine-list to begin with...

Relatively easy to get in at Estia (a huge plus on Friday and Saturday evenings!), since it's larger and more well-organized than the typical N.Beach restaurant. The service is very good, and the owners are friendly and near at hand. I wish they were open for lunch; but, at least as of now, they don't open till 5 pm. And they may even be closed on Mondays.

One of my favorite places in the city, for sure...

“When I take a photo of my meal before eating, I know it's a goodie!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

I had a beautiful spanakoritzo for $12.95 US - how freaking good is that?! It was amazing. My friend had the gyros platter and that was equally divine!

Ambience, service, wine - fantastic. I was so sad to leave SF. Why can't all restaurants be this good? I'll be back in 2013!

“Not authentic Greek”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

Coming from Cyprus I was full of enthusiasm to take the family to a have some Greek food whilst on holidays in San Francisco. The best thing about the restaurant was its very polite waiter and the Greek music playing at the time. As far as Greek food is concerned it was disappointing. The food was not bad but just not Greek. Rating it as Greek, it would be 1 star. But as an international restaurant with a Mediterranean/Middle eastern flavour, it was probably worth 2 or 3 stars.

Pretty basic and humble Mediterranean offerings on the menu like Pastitsio and Gyros. Very cozy!
