“absolutely amazing!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2007

We were walking through Russian Hill this morning since it was our last day in town and we wanted to check out all of the row houses and climb a few hills. We came across Luella's and my husband decided we should check it out for dinner. WE ARE SO GLAD WE DID!!! The food, the service, the neighborhood are all absolutely incredible! He ordered the coca-cola pork shoulder and he didn't even need a knife to cut it. Yeah, it was that tender. Amazing! I ordered the New York strip and it was wonderful! We didn't really have room for dessert, but ordered it anyway. We had the orange ricotta fritters, and oh my gaaawd!

“great meal great night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2007

Just had dinner at Luella last night with some friends and the food was great. The Coca-Cola braised pork shoulder with white bean purée and pickled red onions, yes you read right: coca-cola. Just try it trust me. The duck was good but the orangy sauce was so so and quit bitter.
Now the great part: desert. One word: spectacular: the Warm chocolate pudding with mascarpone cream is unbelievable and the Banana cream pie with Valrhona chocolate sauce is exceptional. Overall it is a great place in a great location but parking is a pain. I guess it is San Fran after all and when in such a great city one can handle tough parking.

“Pleasant surprise in Russian Hill”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2005

My family and I were all set for Spanish cuisine one Sunday night at the end of June and after walking some steep hills from our Fisherman's Wharf hotel, we discovered the restaurant closed. My children, already slightly complaining about the walk, were ready to eat anything, so we couldn't go too far. A short walk to a cozy Italian spot turned up negative, since they were booked for the evening. The hostess did recommend a small Mediteranean restaurant across the street. Were we happy to be recommended to Luella. It is a quaint, quiet, and small restaurant, elegantly decorated with an open kitchen in the back. Thankfully, they were not crowded and we sat down to a very enjoyable dinner. The hostess was very gracious and the wait staff very personable and friendly. From the wine to the dessert we were very satisfied. The menu may not appeal much to younger children, but we did order steak for the kids and they loved it. If you happen to be in the Russian Hill district and want a real nice dinner, Luella will fit the bill.
