“Good breakfast, great drinks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

We only had breakfast, but it was very good and reasonably priced. The Irish coffees are to die for! Even if you don't eat here, everyone (of drinking age, who drink alcohol) should try one.
The only drawback is finding seating at busy times.

“Love the Irish Coffee. Bathrooms are FILTHY”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

I am surprised that the uber-liberal government of San Francisco has not sent in the board of health over to shut this place down. The Irish coffees are very good but very expensive.

On the other hand, the bathrooms are vile. As soon as you walk in you get a stench of bathroom smell. I went down to wash up before my drink, and I felt like I got dirtier just going in the bathroom. My wife said the ladies' room was even more disgusting than the men's' room, based on my description. The only reason we ordered was I saw the bartender was his hands at the sink at the bar.

“What can you say about an institution?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

I've been going to this place for about 30 years. Nothing has changed in all this time - not even the bartenders. The food is very good, and both the food and drinks are overpriced, but who cares? The place is a San Francisco tradition. The Irish Coffee - their signature drink - was about $3.25 when I started going there, and it's $8 now. But it's OK. After about 6:00pm you can hardly get into the place it's so crowded. Breakfast is served all day long. Fun place!

“Irish Coffee”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

In 1952 at the Buena Vista Cafe a lot of hard work & dedication went into perfecting the Irish Coffee. They make about 2000 Irish Coffee's a day. So fascinating to watch the bartender in action. The coffee is good & they do not skimp on the whiskey. All is topped with home-made whip cream. The drink is very tasty & will also give you a kick in the rear. I think they serve other drinks & food also but we came for the Irish Coffee. The place is quaint as well with a large bar & tables. It was very busy when we were there (around 430pm) & were lucky to get a seat. The Cafe is near Fisherman's Wharf at the Powell-Hyde Cable Car turn-around.

Nice little bar a couple of minutes walk from our hotel. Good food, generous portion size. Irish coffee is a must!
