“Great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

the name hotel may be a little misleading to those who travel often. this is what likely used to be an old residential building with apartments. there is no concierge or many services offered but the continental breakfast is included, the location is fantastic and the price cannot be beat. parking is for very small cars so beware but there are options for lots around which arent too expensive and depending on how long you need the street parking is also available. rooms are clean, and have the basic necessities. it will not wow you but for a trip in SF when you need to sleep and have a cozy place to spend the night this is definitely worth every penny.

Quirky but very pleasant décor. Complementary bottles of wine in the well equipped kitchen area a nice touch. Breakfast was the weak point for us .The first morning I ate yoghurt, ham, eggs and cheese, the other options were unsuitable for a diabetic diet. The second morning , more than half an hour before the dining room closed at 9, none of these items were available and there was no bread. When my husband asked the assistant if there was any of these things he was told 'Not today'. Reception staff were very helpful.

My teenaged sons and I shared a suite for three nights here. If you are expecting bland, cookie-cutter chain-style accommodations, stay somewhere else. If you like old buildings with charm, this is your spot. Our room was clean and comfy. The separate sleeping, dressing/food, and bath areas were much appreciated.

We loved the large hand-painted mural of the Dragon Gate in our room, as well as the paintings of Bay Area landmarks on the walls at each stairwell landing. My sons got a kick out of the old-style elevator with the gate, too. Breakfast had plenty of choices. The desk staff was helpful without being obsequious.

The location on Nob Hill is a short walk to a cable car stop, making Fisherman's Wharf a quick trip away. It's also a three- or four-block walk to the entrance to Chinatown. Many of the guests during our stay were international -- we heard English and Australian accents, as well as Spanish, German, Dutch, Japanese, and other languages.

If we return to SF, I know exactly where we'll be staying!

We had a late flight so our arrival at the hotel was at about 11pm. Not a problem at all, front desk staff were efficient and friendly. The lifts were old school but I was glad that we were only on the 1st floor (at the back, nice and quiet) as they were a bit slow. Was pleasantly surprised with the size of the room. We had 2 queen beds and still had plenty of walking space. There was also a large walk in robe plus a 2nd little cupboard with some drawers. Room included a microwave and mini fridge and some cups/plates etc. The walls are on the thin side but from the era of these buildings you need to expect that.

I was expecting a basic breakfast but was very happy when I saw the tea/coffee/juice, cereal, bagels/muffins and multiple bread plus fruit (I'm sure I'm forgetting other stuff too)! Good to get a decent breakfast in the belly before exploring the city.

The staff were so helpful with their maps and best directions to get to places. I'm sure if we had asked for recommendations (we already had our itinerary mapped) they would have been prepared as well.

Location of hotel is great, only a few blocks from Union Square and handy to public transport but be warned, the walk back to the hotel is up! Oh and there is a great little convenience store next door when you have a snack attack.

Room Tip: I am not the best sleeper so asked for a quieter room.

We opted for the “standard” room, but it was still a large room. Microwave, fridge, cups, plates, cutlery - but no coffee maker or jug. It was clean, comfortable and everything seemed to work.

The front desk gave excellent service. Breakfast was good The hotel location is good for sightseeing.

Our room was on the 4th floor fronting the street - it wasn’t hot so kept the windows shut and had minimal street noise - but it was noisy with windows open. There is no airconditioning although the overhead fan works well.

Our room was clean, spacious, well maintained, and quiet. The staff was very helpful and polite. This is a hotel for people who wish to enjoy San Francisco, but do not want to pay for fancy hotel services ( such as a work-out room, spa, or swimming pool) that are not needed. It lies on the edges of Downtown and Nob Hill. One feels that one is living in a time capsule from the early 20th century. There is a large walk-in closet. The big bathtub is deep and comes with a shower. The bed is large and comfortable. There is a daily complementary continental breakfast. We had a great stay. I highly recommend this hotel.

I wanted to try to do San Francisco as cheap as possible, so I booked 5 nights at the Mayflower. Initially I was put-off by their reservation "system" and wondered what I had gotten myself into. We arrived by shuttle in the early afternoon, and was promptly checked in by the guy at the desk. We were given a queen room facing Bush Street. A little loud, but we both slept fine even with the window open.

The room was a queen room complete with desk, dresser and chair. Also came with counter-top, microwave and fridge. HUGE walk-in closet. Overall the room was clean. Maid service was done promptly and to satisfaction daily.

Location, location, location. Cable car stop only blocks away. Food and shopping nearby. Safe neighborhood.

This is the best bang for the buck in the heart of San Francisco. It may be older ,slightly outdated, and not modern when it comes to reservations but it can't be beat!
