“Quaint European-like Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

Pros:
- good location
- close to many restaurants, union square, Grace Cathedral, Powell cable car line (3 blocks)
- simple clean quiet rooms
- slept with windows open (light sleepers will require ear plugs due to city noise)
- comfortable clean beds
- provided simple breakfast
- boiled eggs, scones, muffins, cookies, toast, OJ, coffee .. basic but good
- accommodating
- provided hair dryer, bottle opener, steam iron from front desk
- 3 public computers with laser printer in common area
- well stocked market next door
- good value

Cons:
- minor maintenance issues
- towel bars were not secure
- some painting required
- 4 blocks south is a nasty looking neighborhood
- limited underground parking available at hotel (only compact or smaller cars will fit)

Overall, a very good experience that met and exceeded expectations. I would stay there again!

We arrived for a 3 night stay and it was wonderful from the start. The desk staff were very helpful with plenty of information. We had a room on the 6th floor facing the street. Other than the noise, the room was perfect! If you have trouble with noise, ask for a room in the back of the hotel. Our room was decorated beautifully, and the size was perfect. It is in walking distance to many of the sites in the city, and we had no trouble using public transportation the rest of the time. They have a decent breakfast, which got us easily to lunch, but it was crowded from 8:30-9:00. We just went earlier. The garage parking also saved us a ton of money, but it is VERY narrow. We would definitely stay again!

A great start to our US West Coast holiday! Comfortable bed in a large room on 6th floor at rear of hotel, so very quiet. Convenient deli next door and mini kitchen in room. Good selection for breakfast, tasty muffins , cookies etc. Free internet access was useful.Very helpful staff - helped us get tickets for Alcatraz on a busy day, when mostly sold out.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher level at rear, for a quiet stay

Like some others, I was nervous when they did not want my credit card to hold the room. However, I arrived and all was in order.

Hotel Mayflower is nothing fancy, but it is the genuine article and fit my needs exactly. Was just looking for a clean hotel that was in a safe walking distance to the Moscone center. The walk was about one mile, but the neighborhood was fine if you walked down Bush Street.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting San Francisco that is trying to save money on hotel accommodations.

The only negative was that I had trouble with the wi-fi. However, I never contacted the staff for assistance since my phone works as a hotspot. Just not worth my time to resolve the issue.

The cheap, clean and convenient Hotel Mayflower is positioned well for tourists. She’s a short stroll to Union Square and a couple of blocks from China Town. Walking to Fisherman's Wharf presents a greater challenge (vertically as well as horizontally) but easily manageable. Free parking was much appreciated (the locally available rates were around $50 for 24 hours). However, the steep access route to the underground garage has high kerbing and a potentially destructive (although small) bend about half-way along. Our Toyota Corolla had about 3” to spare between the kerb and wheels on either side (so one of us drove and the other shouted instructions). Elevator access to the garage was not available to guests and it was a nuisance to negotiate the garage’s slope and the street in order to load/unload. However, the staff were helpful, unlocking the garage at any time on request.

According to press cuttings (displayed in the public areas), the Mayflower was built as a residential hotel in the late 1920's. She has clearly been quite upmarket in her day but the lady is now showing signs of age and has an atmosphere of faded gentility. Our room was huge for a city-centre hotel and there was a lot of storage space had we needed it. The tiny old-style elevators (2 people + 2 cases), and the painted ceiling in the lobby were attractive. The murals scattered throughout the building gave the place a slightly "dippy hippy" personality (suitable for SF). However, sluggish lift service, the purple haze towels (labelled as Ralph Lauren), elderly plumbing, poor quality kitchen equipment and multi-coloured patterned carpets were less attractive features -- but all was clean and everything seemed to work.

The negatives? Guests need to provide their own ingredients for Coffee,Tea and use the microwave if drinks were required. Breakfast was a scrum for limited quantities of low quality food/drink – so after one morning we decided not to return but to purchase in one of the many nearby café’s. Overall, we enjoyed our time at the Mayflower and would certainly consider it for a return visit.

We live 4 hours from San Francisco and we have stayed in many hotels in the city, some expensive and some middle-range. The Mayflower is the best. We'll never stay anywhere else. Just perfect for us - quiet, clean, charming, and welcoming. Details are done well and a nice breakfast to boot!

A clean, quiet, friendly, classic hotel with spacious room, closets, flameless (sink, fridge, microwave) kitchen. Extremely reasonable rate. Tasteful hand-painted "murals" above beds and outside room door. Complimentary breakfast - more robust than Continental, less than typical (non-Urban) American. Front desk very helpful. My son and I stayed here in mid-September. Most other visitors were primarily Europeans of all ages. Location as good as can be expected without paying 2-3 times as much.
