“Excellent Italian Trattoria Off The Beaten Path”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

A real Italian place loaded with local charm and real Italian food as in like in Italy. In a nice neighborhood, a little bit of a ride from Nob Hill/Financial, but worth it. My only criticism is stick to the menu rather than letting the maitre'd suggest appetizers and several courses wtih wine....or you will have an excellent meal other than the sticker shock when you get the bill. Very accomodating, very Euro, but very expensive that way; fine if you're on the expense account. Stick to the menu and look at the wine list, and you will have a very nice meal at a more comforting price. I still gave it a "5" wtih that caveat.

“Good everything”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013

The food is so good that it gives me goosebumps.
Service was really good too, staffs were friendly, and fun. The boss was there when I eat, he was a funny guy too.
Pace is quite tiny, so all tables are half of arm length to each other. So good to have reservation before u go.
Must try their fettuccine with truffles infuse sauce.

“Very Enjoyable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

Great food. Not the prettiest main courses or accompaniments but the taste and quality were excellent. We had halibut and sole. Great service. Helped convince me that San Francisco food is better than hometown Vancouver food. Wine was very nice too. Would return.

“Billed as a neighbourhood restaurant”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

This restaurant was booked by the concierge at The Fairmont on Knob Hill. It was billed as a friendly, neighbourhood Italian restaurant. The owner was welcoming on arrival and although the restaurant was quite small it remained very busy during the evening which is usually a good sign. It was however difficult to tell whether the place was full of tourists like us or locals! The service was brash and disinterested. The food quality was I would say poor. And the overall impression we were left with was that Allegro Romano was a bit of a 'get em in, get em out' tourist trap. Not the local Italian we were promised!

“Awful food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

We had a reservation and we left standing in the entrance for 10 minutes waiting for someone to notice us. There was a definite musty odour as we entered the restaurant and we eventually identified it as stale urine. We were finally shown to our table and our water glasses filled. Looking around at the other tables, the food didn't look great. We decide only to order a main dish and leave as quickly as possible. I was studying the menu when suddenly there was a fish next to me with the waiter saying that it was the fish of the day, sea bass. We nodded thank you and he disappeared only to spring up on the other side holding a bowl of uncooked rice with 3 truffles on top. He picked one up as he was reciting the truffle dishes on offer and I could see green mould on the bottom of it. He lost his place in the list of dishes and recited the second half twice. After another 15 minute wait our order was eventually taken and a basket of bread placed on the table. It was unfortunately stale.
The meals came very quickly after we ordered and were overcooked and tasted like they had been reheated in the microwave. My Petto di pollo came with mashed potato, which I didn't think that Italians ate, and wilted spinach which was ok. The glass of Italian wine that I had with the meal was the only high point, it was excellent.
We were then given, we didn't order it, a dish with watermelon and biscotti which was excellent apart from the fake whipped cream in the middle.
We were also given, again not ordered, the worst Tiramisu I have ever tasted. We couldn't finish it. It was accompanied by some of the worst port that I've tasted, it had a nose of old socks and a taste of vinegar.  We eventually paid and got out.

The Americans at the next table we gushing on about how wonderful and authentic everything was and they were right.
It is a cheap Italian restaurant catering for gullible American tourists.
