“Delicious (decadent) food, nice atmosphere and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

Just had dinner here last night so the memories are fresh. What a change from Tangerine (the predecessor restaurant). Kitchen Story gives me a good reason to be in the Mission district.

The 3 of us split a Millionaire's Way starter - thick slices of well cooked bacon drizzled with maple/pepper sauce on top of grilled asparagus. Not a combo I would normally think of but so good! Crunchy, sweet, spicy with the asparagus tang and texture. Our mains were the red curry - tasty but pretty basic, the Short Rib's tacos (delicious shredded meat soft tacos, excellent mango salsa) and the Finger Lickin' (deep fried chicken breast with yummy yellow curry dipping sauce and wedge potatoes). They recommend that the entrees be used family style, so that everyone can share. They provide small plates for eating and bring all entrees on bigger / serving style plates. For dessert we split the Uncle Tai (sweet mango, sticky rice, strawberry bits and chocolate sauce). The menu said that it comes with ice cream but we didn't get any but I didn't miss it! Delicious dessert and the perfect end to the perfect meal.

The restaurant does have healthier meals as well - not everything is covered in bacon, maple syrup, deep fried or sweetened ;-) They have salads and veggies, fish - a wide range of choices. We had a more decadent meal, and it was a bit pricey. One starter, 3 entrees, 1 dessert, 1 glass wine, 1 beer and the total was $100 including tip. Not inexpensive but SO good. I couldn't eat like that every night (or I'd be a blimp) but once in awhile, it's good to splurge.

Forget whatever you may remember about Tangerine! Try this restaurant - you won't be disappointed! My only complaint is that they refilled our water carafe only once. Food this greasy, spicy, sweet, needs more water. Our glasses were empty for a long time and it was hard to catch a server's eye. But otherwise the food was excellent and the service was more than adequate. BTW, I made reservations via Open Table.

“A new Gem in the Castro”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

The ambiance and style of this California Cuisine restaurant is amazing. The food is so good and presented so artfully you almost dont want to break into your dish and change the way it looks. Spicy blends of California and Thai or Southeast Asian style foods give this place a unique menu. The decor and ambiance is lovely and is suited for couples and larger groups. Service is fantastic.
