We always come to Blowfish at least once on our trips to San Francisco as it serves the most delicious and interesting sushi we've ever come across. Add to that the DJ spinning "choons" and funky wait staff and you have a perfect mix. Don't even consider missing out on the ritsu roll, popcorn prawns or sosumi roll - they are definitely to die for!

“Good quality sushi in a modern, upscale environment.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

A more Americanized experience than you would get on the Ginza, Blowfish Sushi gives diners a California-influenced take on the traditional Japanese delicacy. With a vibe that is closer to a nightclub than a restaurant, Blowfish Sushi may not be for everyone: dark-ish interior, loud music, Japanese manga porn playing on screens in the background. It's a little over-the-top, but it's cool, if you can roll with it.

The tuna tower ($10.25), a pyramid of ahi, sake, and avocado, is a wonder of architectural presentation and a taste sensation. It arrives perfectly presented, and then your mixes it before your eyes into a yummy, fish version of guacamole. Served with super-thick ridged potato chips, it is a must-have. Both the hamachi (yellowtail, $5.50) and hotate (scallop, $4.50) were fresh and tasty, if sliced a little on the thin side. Seaweed salad ($4) was spot-on: light and tasting of the sea with just the right amount of sesame oil. Moist and flaky, the miso black cod (~$20) was served over what can only be described as a Japanese version of risotto.

Service was great: the servers were knowledgeable about the different types of fish, dishes arrived at a reasonable pace, and used plates were cleared promptly.

There is a dizzying array of libations, from domestic and Japanese beers and wines from around the globe to imaginative cocktails and numerous premium sakes. The only nit is that the sake menu lacked a description for each selection, leaving patrons less familiar with the offerings to guess at their flavor profiles.

With good sushi, a cool vibe, modern decor, and attentive service, Blowfish really is sushi to die for.

“Blows your mind”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2012

We went to Blowfish for a nice sushi dinner on a Saturday night and a bit of entertainment, we were not disappointed at all. It's located on Bryant, bit out of the way but no worries to get there (we took a cab from the city). It was packed (reservations recommended) and very lively - so for your intimate conversations you may have to speak up there. Music cool, the barkeepers attentive and very friendly and innovative drinks came up right away. The sushi quality was excellent and away from the beaten track, modern, innovative and veeery tasty. We have seen a lot of sushi across the globe --> this was definitely a highlight for us. Highly recommended, it is a cool place.

“Wow! This place rocks. Local, urban, packed, great innovative menu! Tasty.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2012

Thanks to Matt for this choice. The Mission is buzzing. Local hangout, packed on a Wednesday night. Amazing selection of food. Tried out the Russian Roulette oysters. Spider crab. Black cod. Belly pork. All really really good. Definitely go back next time I'm in town.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2012

Slow staff, average food and overall a disappointing experience after the great reviews that I had received from my friends.
