“Good pastries!! Food is heavy but good!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

The bakery items from this bakery are unique and pretty awesome. The sandwiches though are huge and heavy. One sandwich could probably feed 2-3 people. I got the spicy turkey sandwich at it was loaded with pesto sauce. The bread is really thick too. My wife got a cheese and jam sandwich which was good but again very heavy. It is worth waiting in line for this place but it is kind of expensive and everything is very filing. The line does move pretty fast though. We also got the chocolate hazelnut pastry, the lemon cake, and some cheese bread. All of these items were really good. The 3 sandwiches and 3 pastries cost $60.

“High expectation - low delivery”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

We were in San Francisco over the New Years. The first day we walked by it, the line was wrapped around the sidewalk. Based on the line and a recommendation from my cousin, it was suppose to be a great bakery. My fear was like the cupcake place in Greenwich Village in NYC, the long line just means people who follow the crowd for where to eat and thee food is mediocre are best. The next day we were up early and in line when they opened. What each of us wanted was not going to be available for another 90 minutes. That is nuts - they open the their doors for business and you have to wait in a line for 40 minutes to be told that it will be another 90 minutes before those sandwiches are available. We ended up buying 2 pastries - a chocolate and almond croissant plus a quiche and muesli. The quiche and muesli were just OK - nothing that would bring us back or wait in a long line. The croissants were the worst that I have ever had. They should be buttery and soft. These were burnt and crunchy. You would have thought they were 2 days old. Luckily we headed to Napa and I was able to get a real croissant at Bouchon. I think this place is more hype than what it is worth.

“Always My First Stop in SF”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013 credit card Amex Card Member Review

Each time I visit San Francisco, Tartine is my first destination. Expect to wait in line, but the line moves quickly. I always buy two gougères, (a baked savory pastry made of dough mixed with cheese), one to eat right away and one for later. There is a great assortment of cookies, cakes, desserts - just hard to determine which ones. Pressed sandwiches and quiches are great too.

“Make a reservation so you don't have to wait too long”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

Make sure you have a reservation or else you have to wait for a while as it's super popular. The food is delicious and the service was very friendly also. Valencia street have very eclectic shopping so it's a nice stroll before or after the meal. 16th Street Bart (Mission) can be scary, so make sure all electronic items (esp. iPhone, etc) are hidden and walk with a purpose.

“Get ready to wait.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

There is almost always a line. A long line. An inexplicable line. But if you want a loaf of really interesting whole grain bread - there's no better place in town. They bake bread in the late afternoon (4:30pm) so if you go before, you'll only be able to pick up pastry. They do a second baking sometime before 6pm.
