“Fellow Trip Advisors got this one WRONG”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2014

This weekend, I am with my family in San Francisco. We were looking for some authentic Northern Italian cuisine for dinner as a break from the week's worth of seafood. Referring to my fellow Trip Advisors, we came up with Tommaso's Italian Restaurant on Kearny Street in the North Beach area. A confirmation with the hotel concierge gave us confidence that we were headed in the right direction.

Tommasso's is located at the top of a hill on Kearny Street, a block north of Columbus. It is a small place. People were waiting in line outside, a good sign. We were told that the wait would be only 10 minutes. As promised, we were seated in short order. The restaurant is very noisy and cramped. There are 12 booths and a long communal table running down the center of the restaurant where you don't get much privacy. The din of diners is deafening and it makes it hard to carry on a conversation. But the Italian kitchen smelled wonderful and the smoke from the wood fired pizza oven punctuated our appetite.

Our order was taken quickly and the food came without much wait. Here is a summary of the food that our family encountered:

Caesar Salad. Tasty, but not remarkable.

Carpaccio: Extremely cold as if it had been in the coldest part of the fridge, tasteless.loaded with too much cheese and onion (?!).A wedge of lemon. No arugula.

Egg Plant Parmesan: Gooey. Sour. Not well prepared. Borderline inedible but scorching hot. It came with a plate of Penne pasta in marinara sauce. The pasta was overcooked and the sauce sour, just like the Egg Plant.

Fettuccini with Pesto: Like cement and tasteless. The entire plate was discarded.

Pizza:. Dry brittle crust that looked prefab. I didn't see any crust prep in the pizza prep area. This is sinful for a restaurant with a wood fired oven.

We had plenty food left over but it was so bad that we opted not to take the leftovers

Tommaso's is classic American Italian, and not even very good. It seems that it appeals to the masses who don't know authentic Italian cuisine like we do. It certainly isn't Northern Italian. Tommaso's shovels out food that an abomination of one of the finest cuisine's in the world. The cramped, noisy, get-em-in-get-em-out feeling that one gets in the restaurant would be more representative of a feed trough, but not a fine Italian restaurant as represented on Trip Advisor.

Cost for an almost inedible meal: $148 for 2 adults and a child. With all the wonderful places to eat in the City by the Bay, Tommaso's was an utter disappointment.

“Enveloped In Warmth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2014

Tommaso's is warm, lively, and great fun. The food is consistently scrumptious, and this month's papardelle special is not to be missed - although I already miss last month's corn pizza! We go to Tommaso's for the excellent food and service and the warm congenial atmosphere. Not to mention that you never know who you will run into at the restaurant - from Nicholas Cage to Jerry Brown - there is always a celebrity to be sited!

Best italian restaurant in the city.
The spinach pizza, chicken parmigiana, Caesar salad are all AMAZING.
And for dessert don't forget the spectacular tiramisu'.
