“Neat ambiance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

Cool decor loaded with history. The food varies from awesome to very bland, depending on what you pick, but it is all cheap and they give you plenty of it.

“Tommy's was Great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

We were in San Francisco over the President's Day weekend, and thought we would stop into Tommy's. You can't miss the restaurant when driving down Van Ness - very colorful graphics on the building. Prices very reasonable - particularly by San Francisco standards.

Inside, people queue up to get served at a cafeteria-style line, and watch as your sandwich is carved or food served up. We ordered the roast beef sandwich (they were inexplicably out of barbeque beef at 1 pm) and the buffalo chili.

The beef was moist and juicy, served with a side of au jus. The chili was very flavorful, though like another reviewer noted, I couldn't find the buffalo.

The decor is as described by others, with an upstairs area providing lots of additional seating.

The downsides? No real wait staff to fill waters, and having to feed a parking meter $2.00 per hour.

I would definitely return.

“Hungry? Head to Tommy's Joynt”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

Tommy's Joynt is a landmark in San Francisco. You walk in past the glassed-in serving counter, where you can watch the guys carving various meats and serving up huge plates of food. It smells so good your mouth begins to water, and you can't help but stare at the trays of food people are carrying to their seats. If you go right at lunchtime the line is very long, but it moves pretty quickly. My husband and I usually get there around 1pm, and we've never had a problem finding a seat. Be sure to check out the daily specials; they're fantastic deals! The sandwiches are what make Tommy's famous, though. My favorite sandwiches are the pastrami, and the corned beef.
If you're not too hungry, sit at the bar and order one of their beers from around the world, or get an Irish coffee--not only is it delicious, it's the best priced Irish coffee in the city! Or, if it's a hot day, try the rum punch.
If you are going to visit San Francisco, be sure you make time for Tommy's Joynt. You won't be disappointed!

“Buffalo Chili?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013 via mobile

Heard about this place from "Drive Ins, Diners, & Dives". Large portions, but my husband got the "buffalo" chili...well, there wasn't a speck of meat in it! Wouldn't be going back...sorry...

“A real landmark with food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

Had the Buffalo Stew, it was great. There are things nailed to the walls that have been there since WWI. We chatted with the guy beside us, he built ships at BayView. Open a conversation - it's still a pretty good restaurant.
