“Down by the Sea”

Oh, what a nice place. I love the city of San francisco but stay out in outer Sunset is really relaxing, The motel is outta the past but you know that from other reviews, Lets see if I can tell you something new. To me what stood out was the attention to detail. I had the room that everyone else was complaining about. The "L" train which is your best friend, it hauls your butt back to the city for 2 bucks, and it located on the corner. I have lived in citys all my adult life so urban noises, I have become accustomed to. Life in the city is great, but takes an adjustment. The kitchen is not a kitchen "et" it a frig'n kitchen. A four burner gas stove with oven. 4 slot toaster large Frig. A set of everything for 4, wine openers, cooking utensils. I made my famous Spaghetti sauce. The heat is great. They have a nite lite in the john which points on the commode like a spot like. (nice touch at 4 in the morning). They also has a beautiful garden in the back, and I never saw anyone sitting on the bench. This place is perfect for relaxing and unwinding from your life, up at 5:30 every morning, walk to the beach, two blocks away start a brisk walk, maybe you will see one or two early risers on the beach. After that head to Johns ocean cafe, not the best but good food. Or maybe just a coursant or a muffin and coffee at the the java beach. Again not the best coffee, but the coursant is great. The L line takes you up to some really ok places to eat. I know san francisco pretty good. This time I never left the sunset dist. thanks to Ocean Park Motel

Room Tip: Get a room with a kitchen, the court yard rooms are nice but not very private. Learn the muni system...

Pros: close to ocean and walking trails, close to zoo, muni stop across street, very clean,
Free onsite parking
Cons: In "fog belt", older property, so fewer plugs, small bathroom, less soundproofing.
Muni is noisy (ear plugs are provided if you need them; we didn't), ask for a room
In the back away from the street

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back, away from the street.

I was able to make a reservation with little notice and the owner stayed up till late in the evening for us to arrive and was very helpful and friendly, even upgrading our room. It was perfect as a romantic getaway, a little gem set by the sea and away from the hustle and bustle of the main city. It felt like we were transported back to art deco days and added to the atmosphere. We'd happily come here again.

Very pretty little motel, and $150 for a room with a full kitchen isn't a bad deal in SF. However, the two most important things for us are a good mattress and decent water pressure. Mattress seemed both very firm, and lumpy--neither of us slept well all night. (We do a lot of hotel travel, and have rarely slept so poorly due to the mattress being uncomfortable.) And the shower pressure was extremely weak--hand-held shower, with not enough pressure to actually spray, just sort of dribbled.

Apart from these issues, it's a great-looking place, with nice folks at the front desk, and we had no problems with street noise (our room was at the back of the property, so ask for that if street noise is an issue for you). We'd have liked to return, but that bed was a deal-killer.

Room Tip: Back of hotel is much quieter.

We chose this motel near the SF Zoo and Great Highway for one night, because everything in or near downtown SF was at $400+ per night due to a conference in town. We also were interested in the historic and art deco architecture aspects of this 1930s hotel with 'streamline moderne' design. The people were great: very friendly and accommodating, quickly switching us to a different (better) room, #3, when a small plumbing problem developed in #19. In both, the room was very clean. While there have been renovations, this motel has not been completely updated in the interior. Rather, fresh paint and new/clean bedding are found in small rooms and tinier bathrooms. #19 is to be avoided unless you are a very heavy sleeper. Just spending a few minutes there when we first arrived we thought the noise of the trams, cars and busses just outside would be excessive, although the motel does offer earplugs on the nightstand. There is a hot tub which we did not visit and a very lovely little garden for relaxing with children's play equipment at one end. #3 includes a kitchenette and was a lot quieter, despite being next to a street. On the plus side as well, they are very dog friendly and have a reasonable fee for your dog. For a small dog it is $10 per night and larger dogs are $25. On the down side, all rooms that we saw had steps up to them, the fewest being the 3 up to our room #3. Anyone with mobility concerns will have a difficult time with the steps as well as the somewhat cramped rooms and doorways and lack of space in the bathrooms. Other guests appeared to be younger and included several families who would make good use of the 2 bedroom units with kitchenette. Being across from the zoo and beach also makes it family friendly. The neighborhood includes a number of art deco residences that have been restored and boast colorful exterior paint. A fun area to explore. For those not from Northern California, this area of SF typically is pretty foggy and much cooler than elsewhere in the city. In the end we really liked this motel for its style, cleanliness, nice staff and pet friendly policies. We, as travelers, are at this point more inclined to creature comforts than this retro little spot can offer.

Room Tip: See review--discuss which room you'll get with staff when reserving.

The motel itself is great - architecturally interesting, immaculately clean, well maintained, good value and quite the friendliest owners. However, before you book there are three things you should know: 1/ this is the foggiest part of a famously foggy city. In our trip in early August, it only lifted for an hour a day in mid afternoon, even though eastern SF was clear. 2/ You are about as far as it is possible to be from the main tourist sights, eg Fisherman's wharf and Coit tower, a good 40 minute drive. 3/ If you are unlucky enough to get one of the front facing rooms (eg the family suite with kitchenette) you will not sleep for the sound of trams. From 5am it is like camping on a railway platform, with trams running every 20 minutes and loud enough to make the bed vibrate. The owner moved us after the first night and looked kind of embarrassed, like he knew he'd rather sold us short, and the second night was great. But really, I wouldn't stay in those front rooms for any money, so do specify when you book.

Room Tip: avoid any rooms facing 46th avenue

As a big fan of San Francisco, I have stayed all over the city. I had never stayed, nor explored much, over in the Sunset/Ocean Beach area. We wanted to take our 3 year old to the zoo and Golden Gate Park for his first trip to SF and found this little gem. We knew we didn't want to stay downtown as it is really overstimulating and the prices for anything on the Wharf were outrageous. We found Ocean Park Motel here on trip advisor and were not disappointed. For people who appreciate history, charm, character and older buildings....you will love this place. The landscaping is so lush and beautiful you forget you are in the middle of a "concrete jungle." The grounds are meticulously kept by the owner himself. The rooms are basic, but EXTREMELY clean. The beds were more comfortable than your average place, which I appreciate as I am accustomed to a tempurpedic and motel/hotel beds usually kill me. The private hot tub was a nice escape after traveling down the state with a child.... In reading other reviews/complaints I wanted to add- the WiFi was never a problem for us and the streetcar was not a bother. We did stay in a room that was not directly not he street, but it wasn't that far from those that were and it never bothered any of us. I am a very light sleeper and it never woke me up. It is actually much quieter at Ocean Park than any hotel/motel I've stayed at in SF. Union Square is so loud with sirens, transportation, etc.

Ocean Park was a little oasis, perfect for families or people who want to stay off the beaten path and experience a different part of San Francisco. We didn't mind driving to our destinations as driving through SF is also a great experience and we actually saw more than we ever have. It was also great not to pay 400+ a night. The199 (with tax) for TWO rooms was well worth it. The owners take pride in their establishment and it reflects by the grounds, cleanliness and advice/tips they give to their customers. We didn't even have to get on trip advisor, google, yelp etc because they provide a 4+ page handout on all the close/nearby eateries and sights. I talked directly with Vicki, the owner, when booking and she took special care to place me in the right room for my family. She even placed us in a room that was over their storage/laundry so I never felt worried about my 3 year old running around....there was no one below to complain! I loved that! They truly know their customer base and cater to individuals. If you are expecting the Four Seasons or a modern place, this is not it. But if you are expecting a quiet, clean, beautiful, charming home away from home this is the only place like it in San Francisco!

We will most definitely be back to Ocean Park! Frankly, I don't see any reason to say anywhere else!

Room Tip: Just explain to the person you book with what your needs are and they will place you in the right ro...
