We stayed at the Ocean Park Motel in early November 2011. We are a family with younger kids vacationing in SF for a week. The Ocean Park Motel was a great option for us. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
--Clean, safe, and ample parking.
--Our room had a fully functioning kitchen (not sure if they all do), but the full sized fridge and gas stove allowed us to make breakfast in and pack lunches most days, and offered a good place to store leftovers, etc.
--Is 10 yards from a MUNI trolley that goes directly downtown (no need to switch and trolleys were very frequent)
--Within walking distance of the Zoo, the beach, and a good cafe and pizza place.
--Easy to drive most places from here and very easy to find/get to.

Cons:
--Very loud. That trolley I mentioned is convenient, but also goes directly by the building, and if you have young kids it can keep them up/wake them up the first couple of nights.
--WiFi is totally unreliable. With our smartphones this wasn't a huge issue, but if you are in any way planning on relying on the WiFi, don't.
--Little small. This is a good spot to come back to at the end of the day after dinner, and get up an go in the morning, but if you think you'll be spending any significant amount of time in the rooms, just be advised they're small. Our rooms didn't have desks or anything like that and no real space for kids toys or anything like that (although the kitchen had a 2-person table).

Overall I would definitely recommend the Ocean Park Motel for families looking for economic places to stay while seeing SF.

We stayed for two nights in a suite with three double beds and a tiny bathroom, with a fridge and microwave. We wanted to stay longer but the motel was full! I think the cost was $165 per night including tax. The architecture is really cute, decorated in purples and blues outside, and the staff very friendly - even before we arrived. The wifi is a bit dodgy due to the buildings' alignment, but ok for emails. The hot-tub is lovely, in a tiny courtyard set peacefully away from the main part of the motel.

No meals are offered, but there are several good local cafes, and take-away places will deliver. We got given such local info when we checked in - really thoughtful and useful. The interior decor was a little more typical, not matching up to the promise of outside, but still calming and tasteful.

But the main draw is the location - at the end of the streetcar line and just one block back from the beach - great for a stroll having been cooped up in the car. The tram took about 30 minutes to downtown, stopping right in the middle of everything.

We would love to go back some day, and special thanks to Chester who sent on something we left behind...

Good if you want to experience the art deco of yesterday. Very convenient to the beach. They do allow dogs. They have a hot tub but we were not interested in a public hot tub in San Francisco. There is no a/c and the heat is tricky to operate. They open the windows after they clean, so if you come back at night it is cool. They did not provide us with clean washcloths, towels, yes. No kleenex, needs more shelving in bathroom or somewhere to put your stuff. We would not have paid the amount we were charged if we had known all this. I could find a better place, cheaper, more convenient and with breakfast for what they charge. I based my stay on the reviews I read here, don't believe them all. Rooms are small. Mold in the shower! You need earplugs for traffic noise.

It was a great stay. The motel had a wonderful period charm, it was quiet, clean and felt very safe. The room wasn't posh and the bathroom was small by modern standards but it was clean and comfortable. It was close to the beach, which was great for an evening walk. The management was very relaxed and friendly. Parking was easy, handy and free. We enjoyed having breakfast and coffee at the Java Beach coffee shop, which I'd also highly recommend, and which was just around the corner. We took the transit into the downtown area one day - it worked fine getting us into the downtown area but I would not recommend transit for moving from one down-town sight-seeing location to another. We found the downtown buses to be extremely crowded and not very pleasant - I might take transit into the downtown area but another time I'd investigate tour bus companies for actually getting from one site to the next. Also - I'd agree with the reviewer who commented on the temperature - it was colder than I expected, so dress in layers and be prepared for the day to warm up or cool down.

Room tip: Our room had windows and a door onto an inner parking area - so felt somewhat isolated from street noise. Nights were very quiet.

This was a wonderful place to stay. First, it's seriously cute. Second, it's close to important stuff. Like the L -- which got me across town, no problem. Also it's close to the zoo and the beach. I was thrilled to be able to get up and go for a walk first thing in the morning. Third, the rooms are small, but clean. And most importantly, safe. The staff was friendly, kind and helpful. Fourth, there are a few places to eat close by. Fifth, no problem parking, either. I enjoyed my stay and can't wait to come back!
