“Nice hostel, quiet but also boring”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

This hostel is located in a beautiful spot, a park-like environment overlooking the bay, golden gate bridge and alcatraz, exactly what you want to see upon your arrival to San Francisco. It is close to the main tourist area Fisherman´s Wharf and public transport, stopping right around the corner, will pretty much get you anywhere in the city.
The hostel is clean, although the shared bathrooms could be tidier, has good facilities, although the wifi only works in the common areas, offers free breakfast in the cafe, although not enough for a big guy like me ;) and it is quiet, though on the other hand pretty boring for a hostel. A lot of "althoughs" in this review, right? That´s exactly what you get from this hostel: A decent, clean place to stay but not an excellent "home away from home" that you will be remembering a lifetime... that´s why it only received 3 out of 5, sorry!

First impressions weren't great I won't lie. I'm used to somewhat more modern hostels (also a 27hr greyhound bus trip hadn't put me in the best mood) but after a good nights sleep I realised what a great place this is. Once I got over the initial shock that showers just had a curtain and ur kind of expected to not mind getting changed in front of others. Worked around it by having my stuff just outside the shower and towel over the rail. Anyways it's pretty quiet so never had a problem. Free breakfast is a great bonus and good - bagel, fruit, oj and tea or coffee! Also location is awesome so easy to get anywhere from golden gate bridge to downtown. 22 person dorm too and wasn't as bad as I feared. Free wifi big plus. Also nice chill out area. Would definitely stay again :)

This is a gem of a place, bay view when eating breakfast in a green area right beside the centre of town. GG bridge and Alcatraz view when you walk outside of the building. Nice communal area, good kitchen, cinema, pool room, internet, phones etc...This place has everything you need and it is in a REALLY handy location. We were on our honeymoon, you could pay top dollar for a mediocre room in a mundane hotel with a bedroom window staring at a grey wall elsewhere in town. We stayed in 5 star hotels, motels, b&b's, hostels and other when away and this was definitely one of the best places. The private rooms are better in my opinion but if you are happy to be in a dorm then they are fine too.

Room Tip: Go for a private if you are a couple and book early.

This hostel is a 5min walk from Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco and is situated in Fort Mason. The best thing about this hostel is the location and free parking permit, although when we arrived on a hot Saturday it was difficult to find a space and we drove around the car parks within Fort Mason for 30min trying to find a spot. Having said this, apart from that Saturday every other day we had no trouble at all finding a spot and having free parking available in the heart of San Francisco really was a bonus when staying here. The hostel itself is slightly shabby, the rooms are basic and when we stayed here the rooms were unbelievably hot overnight. It didn't help that the other travellers in the dorm that had beds closest to the windows wanted them closed all night!! The bathrooms in this hostel have a lot to be desired. There was a strong stench of urine in the bathrooms and they are in dire need of a revamp. The breakfast here was ok although there was a limit on the items you could have with little choice. At breakfast you had to present a token (given upon check-in) which enabled you to have either; 2 waffles OR a bagel, one piece of fruit, and a glass of juice and coffee. Overall, this hostel is ideal for travellers with a car who don't mind putting up with dirty bathrooms.. but it wasn't for me!

We stayed for two nights in a 4 bed dorm room, and was very please with the low price, the location in between Golden Gate bridge and Fisherman's wharf, and the very friendly and helpful staff. The breakfast that is included in the price was also a nice surprise; including bagels, waffles, juice, tea/coffe, and a fruit. We did not use the kitchen area, but it was also very well equipped. But all this does unfortunately not (in our view) make up for the old beds, the poor cleaning in the room, the dirty toilets, the smelly furniture, and so on. We will go for another accomodation the next time we are in San Francisco.

I took a group of 15 college students along with my husband and son to stay at this hostel while we were working on Alternative Spring Break service projects in the Bay area. First of all I must say the location is absolutely incredible. The bay is literally out the back door with striking views of the Golden Gate Bridge to the left and Alcatraz to the right. The ambiance created by the location and history of the building is wonderful. Loved listening to the fog horns and barking sea lions. I thought many dining options and stores were withing a reasonable walking distance.

All that being said this hostel could use a good scrubbing. I realize it's San Fransisco and very humid, but the amount of mold growing in the bathrooms was overwhelming to say the least. Even my six year old son was grossed out. Now if you have a pair of flip flops and don't mind showering with your eyes closed this might not be an issue for you. That's what we did! I also thought the floors were dirty and not swept or vacuumed well, but if you keep your shoes on that's not a problem either.

Customer service was hit and miss on this trip. Some desk clerks clearly excelled at their job while others were bothered to even be working. Clerks had a hard time recommending places to dine or excursions for the students. Good thing we live in a world of smartphones. Oh and speaking of, Wifi in this hostel is terrible. Can only be received in one spot and there are so many people on it, it's terribly slow.
