“Great location, excellent kitchen, nice rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

We stayed in the double room on the ground floor of a separate building. This part of the hostel is very quiet, really good hot shower and toilet on each floor, high speed internet, excellent-equipped kitchen with free tea, coffee and great view. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, plenty well-organized breakfast without a queue in the main building, helpful and friendly staff provided us with all information needed. Huuuuuge dining hall/common room with sky-high ceiling. No one complain at all. Highly recommended.

We stayed in the private rooms just around the corner from the main hostel. The free food that the hostel provided was amazing and a great way to meet other travellers. The hostel also put on lots of activities which were great. The location of the hostel was perfect for exploring San Francisco, it was on a street with a couple of strip clubs but we had no problems.

I've stayed at some pretty average hostels in USA. But Green Tortoise just had the whole experience down. The location is awesome. It's really large and lots of people stay there,
So if you are a solo traveller wanting to meet people this is your choice!! Lots of room to socialize. Central. Clean and highly Recommend. Very experience staff to assist in your touring pleasures. Met some great people here. Fond memes. I'd stay again and recommend to all my friends to stay also. Do it!!!

I stayed a couple nights here whilst trying to find a place on Couchsurfing and Airbnb, which had been my primary form of accommodation around the states. Writing this now seven months later, having travelled through central and some of south america, I can say that of all the hostels in the US, this is the one that was most typical of a proper backpacker hostel.

The place is big, but make sure you book ahead as it fills out pretty quickly. There is a massive dining hall area with a kitchen attached, I am pretty sure you can use it although when I first arrived the chef was taking volunteers to help cook dinner so not sure if its exclusively for the chef. Either way, go help out, it was a lot of fun and the food was good.

The rooms, at the least the one I stayed in, were pretty small but functional and there were plenty of bathrooms scattered around to use, all were clean on my visits despite the number of people in the hostel. The staff were all very friendly, helpful and appeared knowledgeable about San Fran so I have no doubt that they could point you in the right direction for a little sightseeing or just a good time.

The location is also great, being in a pretty trendy area that has some good restaurants and night life. My first day, I ended up walking up to the dock and then all the way out west to Golden Gate Bridge...its all walkable if you don't mind using your legs a little. Fantastic city and the Green Tortoise is a great hub from which to enjoy it as a backpacker.

I stayed in a private room at this iconic SF hostel over thanksgiving 2013, for 4 nights. This is not just a base to sleep. For the right type of traveler, it is the essential component of the SF experience. My room was extremely small and cosy, but this was no real issue. The breakfasts bagels are delicious and there are various events and activities throughout the week to get people together. In fact, it is probably the most sociable place I have ever stayed in. At breakfast one morning I was chatting to some people and we ended up all going on a 'musical' walking tour of Mission/ Castro. Thanksgiving meal was fantastic where everyone got together in the ballroom for a feast! The bar Olympics were fun too & staff were generally friendly, being fellow travelers. One minor issue during my stay that I mentioned to reception so it does not happen again; the cleaners accidentally left my bedroom door ajar for an entire day and evening. Fortunately nothing was taken. All in all, a memorable stay and would recommend for the party loving types of all ages!

Room Tip: 2nd floor - better views, quieter & worth it if you can carry your case up the stairs.

If you're reading this you're probably thinking of staying here, or at least in San Francisco... please read the below.

I don't like to qualify myself for writing reviews, but you can see from my profile I've stayed in hostels and swanky 5* hotels all over the place, however this place is one of the absolute favorites after staying here for a week.

San Francisco isn't too big as a city, but the Green Tortoise is located perfect distance from central, downtown, the Golden Gate and the water (Fisherman's Wharf). Yes there are a few strip clubs around, but they keep themselves to themselves, and nobody had any trouble with the neighborhood - bizarrely it is quite a rich area, very close to the CBD of San Fran.

The rooms are a sensible size with the bunk beds kept in good condition. There are many private bathrooms located of the floors so you can always have a shower in privacy with great water pressure. They are cleaned twice a day.. so always smelt lovely!

The best part of the Green Tortoise is the attitude of the people there due to it having this spectacularly Victorian grand common room. It has a high celing, and many tables which are often full of like minded travelers (mostly aged between 20 - 30) socialising. There is a table football table, 8 free computers with internet (and good ones too!) as well as free wi-fi throughout. The food is the best hostel food I have had, cooked mainly by a charismatic Brazilian chef who chats with you as you get your food making jokes to people... I heard him recommend his re-fried beans saying this it was a Brazilian specialty of nutella that simply must be tasted!

You can hire bikes from them, or hire them at Fisherman's Wharf and get a discount. We made some friends are the yummy breakfast (make your own eggs, toast your own omelettes and all the OJ you can drink) then walked to Fisherman's Wharf, had a look round and hired bikes to cycle the 2kms to the Golden Gate. It was spectacular!! Then had a chilled lunch overlooking the water on the north side of the bridge, and got the ferry back with the bikes on board. It only cost about $3 and cruised past the bridge and Alcatraz - a perfect day out.

The bar crawls and "beer Olympics" are well worth a craic - the teams are split so don't expect to win if you're good, just expect to make lots of friends.

I could write more and more... just stay here - it's clean, well run and great value for money when you take into account the breakfast, dinner every other day, location, free wi-fi, computers and immensely cool common room for making friends!
