We stayed at the GT in Jan for 2 nights in a private room. The hostel is big and has an emphasis on creating a party oriented atmosphere. Our room was small (25), and I mean small, damp and outside the window was a generator that rumbled on until 2am. It's was like a helicopter right outside the window. DON'T expect much sleep if you stay in 25,can't comment on the dorms.

Eclectic mix of people, usual US writer/musician wannabe's right up to inde travellers in their 60's. The location, yes it's next to strip clubs etc but actually I found the location pretty decent. Next to little Italy and Chinatown. The staff here really need customer service training (except one girl), its not hard to smile and be polite. The free breakfast is very good, bagels, oatmeal, fruit, Nutella juice and strong coffee. And the 3 nights a week free dinner was even better, veggie curry cooked very well. We hardly spent on food during our stay. The ball room common room is almost regal but needs a little reorganising and tlc, it could be so much nicer. We stayed in Jan and it was uncomfortably cold in the room and common room. I appreciate it must be expensive to heat such a big room but surely it's better than having freezing cold guests.

In summary I would rate higher if staying as a inde traveller but I wouldn't stay again as a couple. The food really sets it apart though and was amongst the best free food for quantity/quality from any hostel I've stayed at.

Although the hostel is located amongst adult entertainment businesses, I felt safer in this area than other "nicer" tourist areas. There are always people out and about and doormen in the area. It is a little noisy at night. But overall was a nice experience. They have nice common areas, and social outings to get to know fellow travellers. Very close to bus routes, and walking distance to many tourist attractions. I would likely stay here again.

I don't normally write reviews but I had such a great experience at the green tortoise in September. Staff were so helpful. Facilities were great- free breakfast and Internet access. Excellent location & went on a few trips through GT too. I would definitely recommend this hostel!

Nice hostel with helpful staff. Rooms were a bit cramped but clean. Bathrooms had good privacy. Decent nightlife and good free dinners. It's located on a fairly seedy looking street but is close to all the attractions.
