“Comfortable rooms and soundproof”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

After a 10.5 hours flight from Copenhagen to SF, it was nice to be welcomed by the receptionist in a friendly and professional way. We had booked the room 6 months in advance and had a corner room on one of the upper floors, and we were very satisfied. Beside the king size bed the room has a sofa and a coffee table, a writing desk and a fully equipped bathroom of 4-star quality. The soundproof windows make it possible to sleep at night. The breakfast, which is served on the ground floor, is optional and not included in the room price, is very good, but I think it is overpriced. We chose it anyway all our four mornings due to convenience. Our Lonely Planet guidebook says that the hotel is situated in the Union Square area, and in that case it must be in the outskirts of the area. If you want to stay at or one or two blocks from the square, you should choose another hotel.

It was our pleasure welcome you to Hotel Adagio with the warm and inviting greeting that you deserve. We are very happy to learn of your comfort in our corner room and that you found the furnishings and bathroom of great quality. Also, we appreciate you recognizing and mentioning our soundproof windows that truly aide in keeping each room so quiet and peaceful. We were only in town for one night and stayed here since it was close to Union Square but not priced like it. Older building that's been updated to a comfortable level but it's not a resort. Only issue is breakfast was terrible and overpriced at $48 for a $15 Waffle House meal. Oh, last thing, the elevators are sloooooow.

We stayed here for 6 nights in September 2012 in a Junior Suite. We booked about 3 months in advance through Splendia and got an excellent rate which made it a more affordable A$258 p/night (though didn't include tax which was a bit misleading). The room was really good - beautiful large modern bathroom, a sofa and coffee table, writing desk and views from two sides (corner room). The hotel location is great, being only a few blocks away from Union Square. There's also an Avis car hire just around the corner where we hired a cool little Mini for a day trip out to the Napa Valley. The first morning we had breakfast at the hotel (only a-la-carte available) and found it limited option wise, expensive and not that nice unfortunately. The breakfast wait staff were omnipresent to the point of being annoying instead of helpful. There are plenty of places outside the hotel to have a much nicer (and cheaper) breakfast, and that's what we did on subsequent days. That's about the only gripe we had, everything else was good, plus they give you the option of $5 off your stay per day if you decline the daily servicing which is handy if you're not that messy anyway. You can choose that on a day by day basis. The hotel car also got us to the airport super fast when we were rushed for time on the day we departed.
All in all I'd say consider this hotel as the rooms are lovely and the location is great, but eat elsewhere.

Dear SherrySparkle,

Thank you for sharing your candid feedback. While we are pleased that you enjoyed our competitive rates and and beautifully renovated rooms, we are disappointed that our breakfast options did not fit your preference. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, as it is very important to us to listen to our guest's insight and make the necessary changes or improvements. We are glad that you would return and hope to see you soon.

For our first San Fran trip, we picked this hotel based on recommendation we stay in Union Square. This hotel had a great package deal (free Valet, and food credit) and while still high city-pricing, was a better value than other hotels in the Union Square area. First, a note about location. While the hotel MAY technically be in Union Square, it borders a much more sketchy part of town known as the Tenderloin district. Walk a 2 blocks south, or one block west, and you may quicken your pace a bit. It's ok, just go east a few blocks first before you cut down to Market st for any transit options. Overall a good experience - rooms were clean, neat and had windows that actually opened. That ended up being important because while we could figure out the heat, we could not get the A/C to come on. So had to accept some street noise to get the cool Pacific breezes.

Breakfast - quite good (but expensive) - would recommend at least one breakfast in the small restaurant downstairs.

Valet - also very good - car always there quickly.

Concierge Scott was also helpful - he contacted us before our trip, and arranged for hard-to-get Alcatraz tickets and hop-on hop-off bus package at a price better than we saw downtown. We did have trouble with the bus tix, but Scott got that straightened out for us.

Overall a decent hotel experience for the money, but $100 more a night prob gets you better a few blocks more toward Union Sq park.

We found the hotel because it had a great price for the night that we needed it. We loved that great spot that it was in as well being right by the amazing shopping and such. They had a great breakfast as well. I noticed one of the previous reviewers said there was too much street noise. I had no such issue, they have two exterior windows to help shield the noise and made it a peaceful retreat from the street. I would definitely return here the next time I am in the city by the bay.

The hotel is conveniently based just around the corner from Union Square and the room was generally of a good size and quality.

The issue we had with the hotel was the service and room cleaning. We had booked for four nights and the room was lacking a hairdryer, but his was quickly supplied on a call to reception. After the first night our room was cleaned (beds made and towels replaced etc), but for our remaining stay this was not done. We had to request replacement towels and when we requested the room to be cleaned, we were promised this would be done and left the hotel to provide them the time to carry out the emptying of bins and the beds to be made up. However, we returned to find that all that had happened was that towels had been placed on the unmade beds.

Another issue we had was we returned from sightseeing on our last day of our stay to find that our room keys did not work and the reception staff stating that we had only booked for three nights not four. This was despite us having a pre-paid booking document stating the room was for four nights. They used this as an excuse for the non existent maid service, but still did not have the beds made or bins emptied etc.

Although not the end of the world, these issues certainly took the shine off our first visit to San Francisco and the USA.

Dear colin g,

Thank you for choosing to stay at Hotel Adagio. We regret that our miscommunication and housekeeping error took the shine off of your first visit to San Francisco. Please accept our apologies. We have discussed your comments with our Executive Housekeeping Manager and have addressed our housekeeping staff. Although, our logs do show an error of a three night stay, there is no excuse for this level of performance at any point during your experience with us. Thank you for taking our location of our hotel and the quality and size of our rooms into consideration when reviewing our property. We do hope that you and your family will decide to give us the chance to deliver an improved stay on your next visit our exciting city.

Best,

We have stayed at most of the Marriott hotels in San Francisco over the last two years. We were looking forward to trying the Hotel Adagio for a 7 night stay. It will definitely not be among our top choices in the future, unless management gets its act together.
Rooms: very nice size. Windows open - but street noise is heavy. Bathroom ceiling vent - gross. Dirty, paint peeling etc.
Housekeeping: staff is lovely and helpful - but they have clearly not been trained well. Towel replacement is spotty, amenities not replaced (and very basic), no evening turndown or housekeeping in the evening
Front desk: Whitney is the bright spot. She was there for the hotel remodel, apparently, and the transition to the Marriott's Autograph Collection. Very helpful and knowledgeable. The others - - either need more training or more experience.
Total confusion over breakfast vouchers. Restaurant staff very insulting ("we will let you get away with ordering from the voucher this time"???? - until we told them we were given vouchers for a Continental Breakfast, no one knew what that was - not on the menu - or the price. They did change the menu after we asked about it.
Dining room - VERY DIRTY. We were seated in a corner and it was quite obvious that it has not been vacuumed for some time. Not pleasant to eat amidst the dirt. Servers were nice, other than the one who insulted us.

Coffee/tea service - very nice in back of lobby
water supposed to be out 24 hours - it wasn't
tried to eat in restaurant bar at 4:05pm (opening time is 4pm) Told that they had to check whether kitchen was ready (???) - food was great - but quite a hassle to order.

Location - OK - surrounded by pretty sketchy area - but very convenient
Concierge - tried to be helpful - not particularly knowledgeable and no follow-up - but Whitney at front desk had excellent restaurant suggestions

Sincerely hope management gets its act together and makes this a hotel that we will want to stay at again.
