“Really Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

I have been staying here on and off for eight years. I must say that is spite of its recent renovations the quality of the hotel has gone down. The most notable aspect of this is the quality of the sheets and the towels and the amenities. The sheets are middle of the range and the towels are thin, small and more suited to a YMCA. The amenities are non-existent in the bathroom. You have to call for cotton balls, a shower cap and there is the dispenser now is the bath for shampoo, conditioner and body wash. While I applaud the fact that this is a more environmentally friendly and economical way to provide these things, the dispensers are cheap and the product the same. The free wine and beer hour has become a nightmare. You hardly can get into the lobby, the noise level that of a bar and there is nothing gracious about it. The coffee maker in the bathroom is cheap, there is aspartamene for substitute sugar and powdered milk for your coffee. If I wanted a holiday inn I would stay at one. The one amazing thing about the hotel is its staff who cannot do enough to make your stay a pleasant one. For a hotel chain that prides itself on customer service they succeed in that area. But the rest - not so much.

Hello, Wendytruth! That is so neat that you are from Nantucket. I have great memories of visiting my Aunt & Uncle's place there as a kid. I want to make sure you feel like you are in the lap of luxury with us her next time, so please feel free to reach out to me and I can provide extra amenities like shower caps and extra cotton balls in your room. We are pretty reliant on the larger pump bottles for our shampoo etc. as an eco standard, though we can always supplement with smaller bottles on request. The Bigelow line is a fun "apothecary" product that is boutique like us and -- at least we hope -- the kind of mild fragrance that appeals to everyone. Since you love our staff here, I do hope you'll give us another try. We aim to please!

just spent here a full week for a scientific event. i liked everything here (except the Blue Mermaid restaurant, pls see a different review). it is located on the north part of the active embarcadero, the fishermens wharf with its boats into the bay, restaurants, bars, shopping and outdoor scenes, you can easy get by the city with the BART train located right near the hotel. the hotel is beautifully decorated around the marine theme, the room i had was large, the bed comfortable, the bathroom perfect, the working desk and internet perfect. there is a concierge that will assist you in everything, i didnt go to the gym so i cant comment on that. they have a nice wine bar and a happy hour with free wines and beers, very nice. in general the service is perfect, i had to receive a delivery after i checked out and the staff was extremely helpful. in short: i will be back and i do recommend!

Great news, thank you, Hannoch!
We are lucky to be in San Francisco, and to enjoy all those connections to BART/SFO, Cable Car, etc. The cable car lines are also so much shorter this time of year. It's a great time to visit San Francisco and do those "must see" things like Alcatraz. I'm delighted that the concierge helped you plan some great activities and then you enjoyed relaxing with the wine party and then in your comfy room. They are so gigantic by San Francisco standards, that hopefully we will addict you with that alone :).

This was our fifth visit to the Argonaut and we were as pleased as ever with the entire hotel, from the welcoming friendly doorman who handled our luggage, and was there every time we left and returned. (I don't recall ever touching the front door) with a cheerful 'have a great day' or 'welcome back.' The front desk people are just as wonderful; personable, polite, eager to please. As beautiful as the hotel is, it's just bricks and mortar without its people, and the Argonaut's people are tops.......Speaking of bricks, the Argonaut occupies part of the old Del Monte Cannery and there is just enough exposed brickwork in the guest rooms and public spaces to remind one of that. The decor throughout is strikingly nautical, and occupying part of the ground floor is the National Maritime Museum, a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours, especially if it's raining.

The only thing I can think of to "complain" about is that since our last visit the Argonaut has picked up on the current trend among hotels and installed bulk dispensers of bath products in its showers. No more little bottles, and no more bars of soap. I suppose this is a cost saver, but it's a pet peeve of mine anywhere, and especially uncalled for at a hotel like the Argonaut. The good news is that when I voiced my concerns at the front desk they were happy to load me up with the real goods: bars of soap are available, you just have to ask for them. Those dispensers are okay at the Red Roof Inn, but c'mon Kimpton, not at the Argonaut.

Did I mention the great location right at Fisherman's Wharf. For those of a certain age for whom San Francisco's hills are for looking at and not climbing, the neighborhood is completely flat. And
there are two painless options for getting downtown to the Union Square area. The Powell and Market cable car turnaround is right across the street from the hotel; and a couple of blocks east is San Francisco's only remaining street car, the F Line, which takes you along the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building, and then up the length of Market Street.

No matter how you slice it the Argonaut is hard to beat, and we'll be back.

Room Tip: Premium rooms are on the fourth floor front and have an unobstructed view of the bay. There are also...

Wow, thanks, Itinerant65! We always appreciate loyalty, but five vacation trips is so flattering! thanks for your detailed review. I will also pass along your feedback about the larger shampoo/conditioner/bath gel bottles, though of course any changes to that could bring a risk to our various eco-friendly certifications. In the meantime, I trust you are a Kimpton InTouch member, and we would be happy to make a note in your profile about adding the traditional small bottles to your room :).

After staying in the Kimpton Harbor Court, we decided that their rooms were just too small. We asked if we could move to a suite and they didn't have one available so they recommended the Argonaut. We got a King Suite and WOW it was great! Over 900 sq ft. It had a great view over the bay clear to Alcatraz and the Golden Gate. The décor is nautical but well done. They have a nightly "wine hour" which is a nice touch. I would highly recommend this hotel if you want to visit San Francisco. Located at Fisherman's Warf, in walking distance to Ghirardelli square and many other sites.

Thanks, imerk! Aren't those suites fun? Our non-suite rooms are also very spacious by San Francisco standards, so if you'd like to economize at any time in the future, you should feel comfortable reserving one of those as well! That said, the suites are fabulous, and nothing beats those ultra-deep soaking tubs :).

My wife stays here on business at least once a month and loves it. We had a wonderful long weekend with the kids and the location is perfect. The little museum on the premises is a lot of fun if you've got a minute, check it out. The staff is always great.

Thanks, Stephen R. I appreciate you plugging the Maritime Museum here at the hotel. A lot of our guests don't even notice it, which is a shame since it really puts the San Francisco waterfront in perspective-- and for free, no less! We are very lucky here at the hotel to be steeped in history and partnered with the National Park Service and their park rangers. The rangers also do a tour on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. if you'd like to meet up with it in the lobby next time!

We checked in at the Argonaut after our long cruise with Cunard in early February 14 and from the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the friendliness and efficiency of the staff. The travel agent had requested a room upgrade because it was my birthday and we got a superb spacious room and early check in when we arrived. Our luggage was waiting for us in the room straight after our check in and a truly lovely touch later in the day, when we returned to the room: there was a complementary bottle of wine with some chocolates and a note wishing me Happy Birthday. Another lovely touch, they have free drinks served every afternoon from 5 to 6 PM in the lobby area - a truly generous gesture.
This hotel is perfectly located for most main tourist attractions and San Francisco is really not too big, so most places are within easy reach. We loved the decor and style and the nautical theme of the hotel.
Great place, great location and really helpful and friendly staff.
Well done Argonaut - we'll definitely come back when next in San Fran.

Happy Birthday, Santos52! I am so happy that our team was able to help you celebrate in style, and you felt your travel agent brought you to the right spot here after your cruise! If we did not get a chance to meet at the wine party, I hope that we get to next time!

On our Seattle to LA road trip we'd already stayed in one Kimpton hotel (Hotel Monaco in Portland, OR), and although our previous experience had been positive, it wasn't noteworthy, the Argonaut however is a league above.

The service was exemplary, as friendly and helpful as could be asked for, the room was excellently appointed, incorporating some sensible touches such as USB charging points, international travel adaptors, etc.

The only minor criticisms I could place are that the concierge is a little on the useless side (his recommendation of Scoma's for a seafood establishment was terrible).

Overall a superb hotel in an excellent location.

"Superb" is music to our ears -- many thanks, salnajjar!
I'll just have to make sure Scoma's hasn't changed, because it is normally a personal recommendation of mine as well, and a city favorite among locals and tourists alike for decades. I'm glad you enjoyed your other adventures and the staff took great care of you. Thanks for visiting!
