“Excellent choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013 via mobile

I stayed at the Argonaut with family for two nights in January 2013. They did not have a room ready for me when we checked in at about 1 pm, but upgraded my booking to a bigger room so that I could check in immeadiately. After a 27 hour flight, this gesture was really appreciated!

I also liked the valet parking. It really has the best location in all of SF.

I often stay at Kimpton when possible because of the service level and The Argonaut is up there with the best. The location could not be better.... less than a block from Fisherman's Wharf next to to a small park by Ghirardelli square. The rooms are a good size.. I have seen bigger but they are spotless in terms of cleanliness and very well decorated. The whole hotel has a nautical feel and they do a great job tying in the building's history to their theme.

I know that I said it before but this is the best location you could imagine.

This is a tourist hotel, located at Fisherman's Wharf. We did not know San Francisco so decided on this hotel, mostly based on Trip Advisor reviews. I guess we just aren't blown away as much as others are by what should be minimum standard in a hotel. Yes, the staff was friendly, but let's face it, most hospitality/retail workers in the US are friendly (we were really impressed by this) so it is not unique to this hotel. San Francisco is expensive so the high room cost wasn't a total surprise but the room was small as was the bathroom. The staff was keen to push the 'free wine tasting' - not actually a tasting though, you just get given glasses of white or red wine. The wine wasn't particularly high quality but it was clearly popular with many others. I think the idea of something 'free' is a bit of a drawcard, regardless of the quality.

We did eat at the hotel restaurant twice in our three day stay but should have learnt from the first visit. We weren't particularly impressed by the food. Pretty ordinary really but lots of it! Yes, servers were friendly but as I said before, servers are friendly everywhere. The fact that they rely on tips for a large part of their income probably has something to do with that.

This was an average experience in an average hotel that was not very good value for money.

Ouch, Littlescapes, I'm bummed to hear you felt we were just on par with the U.S. competition. I can promise you that our rooms are about 1.5-2 times the size of many city hotel rooms here, and you won't find anyone cookier than our doorman or prouder of their dry sense of humor than our morning front desk dude. Just beware the puns may occasionally elicit a grimmace instead of a giggle!

As is explained during a free trour of the area that we took, the Argonaut Hotel used to be a cannery. The building still has the original brick walls and solid wood overhead beams, giving the place an ambience that is at the same time historical, rustic, and luxurious. The complementary wine that is served each evening in the living room type lobby adds to that feeling. The location of the Argonaut is ideal: right out the front door is Fisherman's Wharf. To the left of the hotel is Gharadilli Square with a cable car starting point. Boarding the cable car at Gharadilli Square or walking in any direction from the Argonaut is a trourist's delight.

Not only was this hotel beautiful and well appointed, but the location was perfect for tourists. It's right on the wharf, where you can walk to anything you want. The trolly stop is immediately around the corner, Ghirardelli Square is only 2 short blocks away, restaurants and shops galore, not to mention all the boat and bus tours you could ever want to catch. My husband and I paid for the double-decker bus tour, which was worth it's weight in gold. You could get on the bus right around the corner from this hotel and ride it around the entire city (china town, downtown, you name it) - all day - getting on and off as many times and in as many places as you want. We never had to drive once. Beware though, parking a car here overnight is VERY expensive (around $46/night). Unless you're driving out of the city a long distance, don't bother renting a car. You can catch a taxi anywhere that the trolly, tour bus, or your feet won't take you. Trust me, it will definitely save you $$.

I love Kimpton hotels. They always have the friendliest staff (the bellhop here was hilarious and entertaining) and the extra touches like the luxurious animal print bathrobes and free wine hour make these places the place to stay. Not to mention if you're a Kimpton member, you get free wi-fi and $10 worth of stuff out of the mini-fridge. If we ever make it back to San Fran, we will definitely stay here again!

Wonderful location. We had a bay view room and loved it. Parking is expensive but easy and worth it. Room was large and comfortable. Could walk anywhere along the wharf. Friendly staff. Joined klimpton just before checking in and got free Internet and $10 from the mini fridge.

We stayed at the Argonaut a few years back for a couple of nights on our way to Hawaii..We had brought my mother in law..who was elderly..The hotel was kind enough to honor our request for adjoining rooms. My mother in law loved it. So we are returning to the Argonaut in a couple of weeks for my husbands birthday and..of course there are many hotels to choose from in SFO,,but why change..It is really nice and the service was just great..

Room Tip: Upgrade to a room with a view.
