“nice location - huge suite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

Our huge king suite bay view nr. 356 (corner suite) was on the 3d floor wih a nice view to Alcatraz and seaside. Fancy hotel and room design in nautic style (but would not speak of a luxurious style), brick walls and bathtube with Alcatraz view, large windows. We never used the large living room with dining table and sofa. Even it was more than 20 degree celsius outside, it was always a bit cold inside the room. The room was well maintained, looked new and clean.
Location is good for visting Fishermans Wharf, Alcatraz and cable car station but takes a while to get into the shopping district.
Public spaces looked nice but were small and the few chairs by the fire were always occupied. As for the service, it was good and friendly. We did not use the hotel restaurant, other restaurants had a fresher lookout and the better menu. Would I stay here again? I loved the seaside location, the view, the fancy nautic design and the huge room. For a first time visit, its worth to stay in this location, for a repeat visit, I'd stay close to Union square. For breakfast, go to Hollywoood caffe, its the best. Show up early in the morning as it is small and always full.

Room Tip: top floor, corner room, seaside view

If you are looking for a hotel that is glass encased and absent of soul don't stay here. The building by itself establishes a character which is amplified by the friendly and outgoing staff.

The hotel is directly beside Cannery Row and is just a few blocks away from the piers (which allows for a very pleasant walk). So there is no want of choice when considering eateries or entertainment. In fact, the Mermaid Bar that is off of the lobby is excellent.

We arrived earlier than the 3pm checkin but the staff provided beverage vouchers for the Mermaid which we used until the room was ready, clearly demonstrating the committment the hotel extends toward their guests.

The room itself was charming. Brick, beams and beautiful views......simply fabulous.

Stayed here just for one night after a flight from the UK before travelling to Lake Tahoe.
Great hotel, lovely room, all very nautically themed (unsurprising). Quiet location considering you are near Fishermans Wharf and Giardelli Square. Had a twin room, 2 queens, one for me and one for my wife and son, slept like a log really comfy.

Upon our arrival, the girl at the front desk received us while holding a puppy so that she only could use one of her hands to complete the check in procedure that took like forever!... from that point everything seemed a little surreal, kind of being at a crowed college dormitory, it could be fun but for the high rates of a Kimpton hotel.

The staff was amazing! We could tell they all love their jobs and the people they meet. They did everything they could do to make our Honeymoon perfect! One of the bellhops even gave us a list of places to go and eat at or site see! He was great! We are always going to stay at a Kimpton Hotel because of the experience we had here!

Room Tip: We loved our room facing Alcatraz! We even slept with our window open to listen to the chit chat of...

I stayed here for several nights in November 2012 and LOVED the Argonaut. The staff was exceptionally welcoming and helpful - remembering my son and me by name each day and providing lots of info and suggestions. The location is perfect - right on Fisherman's Wharf so you can walk to Pier 39, Ghiradelli Square, waterfront parks, the cable cars and more. The room was huge with 2 Queen-sized beds and high ceilings. Love the complimentary wine tasting each night too! Nice, quiet room even though it is in a fairly busy area. The Blue Mermaid restaurant was also excellent. Can't think of a single suggestion to make The Argonaut better!

We stayed at the Argonaut for 3 nights in October as part of a West coast US trip. Undoubtedly the location of the hotel is great right by Fisherman's Wharf and close to all the tourist spots that the city has to offer. However for us for the price paid the hotel just didn't live up to expectations. You can tell that it is an old hotel that has just had a lick of paint by the Kimpton chain, our bathroom for instance was pretty bog standard for any chain hotel. Yes the rooms are decorated nicely and the bed was very comfortable. Unfortunately we had to switch rooms after 1 night as were kept awake by the noise of our air conditioning unit. Having reported this to the front desk we were met with a blunt response of "well what do you want to do" rather than them offering any solutions to us. We obviously asked to move & had to wait until 3pm to switch (fine as this is their check-in time) and were then given a much smaller room, but without the noisy air con unit we decided to take it. I guess we were just a little unlucky and would not by any means say never stay here, it's just for us the hotel overall and the service we received didn't quite reflect the £250 per night price tag. We were also stunned to have come back to the hotel at 11pm after a lovely meal out one night hoping to then have a night cap in the hotel bar only to find it was closed and having asked the front desk staff we were told that there was nowhere else in the hotel to get a drink. We have travelled all over the world and stayed in many different hotels and have never come across a 4*+ city hotel where there is nowhere to get a drink before midnight! To summarise, if you can get this hotel at a good price then definitely don't be put off as it is a great location and fun looking hotel, but based on our personal experience I do not think we will be returning.

Lucy C,
I'm sorry to hear you encountered some issues during your stay, although I'm surprised to hear you didn't find our restrooms fresh and new. We just completed a property renovation of all our guest rooms, and the restrooms were a big focus. That being said, we clearly didn't handle your concern of room noise as we expect ourselves to. I'll be sure to circle back with the team and ensure this is addressed. Thank you again for the feedback.
