I selected the Argonaut for the first three nights of a week-long family vacation in California based on the (mostly positive) TripAdvisor reviews. I had a bit of concern about room noise after noting several comments on the topic.
We arrived at the hotel around 1 p.m. on a Saturday after our flight from the east coast and while I had hoped we could drop our bags off until check in, a room was available and we were able to check in early.
The hotel is at a great location, close to all the tourist attractions of the Wharf, but a bit removed from the crowded Pier 39 area. Our room overlooked Hyde Street and the pleasant San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park and we could see some of the Golden Gate Bridge as well. We were glad to have the view as the rooms without a view look out onto the 2nd floor rooftop. The large window could be opened to let in fresh air and the sounds of the park and city.
We enjoyed the popular 5 p.m. happy hour gathering in the lobby which featured free wine. We talked with guests from as far away as Australia. We saw several members of a wedding party pass through the lobby en route to a reception that was presumably on site.
After the long travel day we went to bed early. About 2:30 a.m. we were awakened when several guests who had been to the wedding reception descended on the room right next to us. I called the front desk to complain about the noise and was told they had already received a complaint and that the security manager was en route to the room. While things got quieter, I had to place another call an hour later when several boisterous guests gathered in another adjacent room. Again, the security manager paid a visit and things settled down after that. At the time I couldn’t help but think about the TA reviews about noise concerns, but I think this many rowdy people in one room would have been overheard at most properties.
We ventured out for sightseeing the next morning and when we returned to the room late in the afternoon there was a hand-written note apologizing for the noise issues along with a complimentary bottle of wine. Noise was not an issue the remaining two nights and the note and wine were much appreciated.
The room included a 27” tube TV (flat screen but not LCD). Wireless Internet is accessible throughout the property and is free for Kimpton InTouch members. It was the fastest Wi Fi I had ever seen at a hotel, testing at more than 6 Mbps.
The doormen were attentive and I want to single out Steven who was very personable and talked with our kids on a couple of occasions. Overall it was a positive and enjoyable stay at a unique property.
