“Cheap, great staff, terrible location and rooms.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014 via mobile

All of my reviews so far have been positive, but unfortunately I can't put a spin on his place...

When arriving you will be confronted with a "jail" like door, needing to be buzzed in. Spend 5 minutes in the area and you will understand the next for the security..

The staff are very nice and hard working!

The rooms unfortunately are quite average, a double bed here can barely fit two people in it, the walls are paper thin, half of the rooms border some sort of homeless shelters smoking area which is extremely loud from 8am onwards EVERY day.

For anyone looking to stay here, please research the local area first! I was staying with another male, only 80% of the time we felt safe walking home. Just taxi it if you have any concerns!

One of the cheapest rooms in San Francisco, however if you spend 5 more minutes searching you may find something a lot better!

+ : Room clean and faithfull to pictures on booking.com, nice guy at the reception, very close to Market Street and downtown, and very cheap price.
- : slim walls let you here people talking until 2am. But the worst is the neighborhood full of homeless people, sometimes agressive people spitting near you while you pass. Avoid by night ! That's why it's cheap. Good for 1 night stay when exhausted by time shift and all you will do is sleeping.
This is incredible how market street is clean and next is this street so crapy.

This place is clean, the staff is friendly, and it's by far the cheapest price we could find. It isn't the best neighborhood for sure, but if you know how to handle yourself you'll be fine. The person who said they had to run in from their cab apparently just has extremely low tolerance for homeless people. Be warned though, it is loud so if you're a light sleeper it's probably not the best choice for you.

In general, please try to avoid staying here. The area is beyond terrible, to the point where you just cannot be outside and have to run from a cab or car to the building. If not, you will get harassed by homeless people at the very least.

The rooms of this hotel are exactly what you'd expect. Small, not cleaned properly, and smelly. The bathroom is shared with other occupants, but actually wasn't as much of an issue as you'd expect. The bathroom was also relatively clean. The window to our room faced another building, and had very loud pigeons sleeping outside on the window sill 24/7. Overall, this place almost ruined my trip. However, the staff was friendly. They let me print something out on their computer and also walked me outside to show me an available parking spot. My first impression of the staff was that they were rude, however you just need to talk to them and they lighten up.

Only stay here if you cannot afford anything else at all. But please just try to find someplace else. This area is so bad, I cannot stress that enough. I literally witnessed a homeless person "use the bathroom" on the middle of the sidewalk in broad daylight 5 feet away from me. It's bad.

When we got off the airport van the driver told us to be very careful. That was probably a premonition of what this place had in store. The barred gate is next. Twenty-five steps up the "Reception Desk" to check in. We were given the key to room 5 which sounds now like a room a previous reviewer had been in. The room's one window faces another building with a court yard. There are quite a few people in the court yard smoking cagarettes and who are, at times, loud. Then there is the cleaning of mop buckets around 10PM or later. You will not need an alarm clock in this room as the noise makers start up around 5:30 but gets quiet again around 8:00AM

There is HBO but the television is on its last legs. The picture was dark and had a red tint. No remote. Some of the channels were very loud and others were almost imperseptively quiet. You will not stay in this room to watch TV.

This is the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. It is a place you may go through during the day if you have to but is better to be avoided. At night you travel through at your own risk. On the way to eat dinner I was accosted by a panhandler and on the way back walked past a drug deal. It was not uncommon to smell the stench of urine as we walked up Turk Street to get to the bus stop.

Not wanting to be completely negative in this review, I would highly recommend this place if you were an anthropologist doing research on under-belly of San Francisco.

Room Tip: Room 5 sucks. It is on the right side of the hall. I don't know if all rooms on this side have...

We had to find some hostel very fast so without more searching we chose this only available. Big mistake. Turk street is maybe in the very downtown but very unpleasant and not very safe. The room had one window with a view to another window and down at the yard was all night sitting some people, talking very loudly, playing music and early in the morning some homeless people started to talk. If you dont have earplugs, you can hardly sleep. Bathroom and restroom is shared at the corridor, it didn´t look very clean. I still haven´t understood why We supposed to stay there two nights, luckily it was just one and it was more than enough. If you look for something clean and safe in SF downtown, look around for something more convenient and book it in advance to have more choices than we had.

Room Tip: Choose different street, downtown doesnt mean safe. Check it on the street viewer on Google maps bef...

Our requirements/expectations: a safe, clean and central place from which to explore San Francisco for the first time on a limited budget. Unfortunately we were booking last minute so there was very little availability and few options. We chose this place because we needed to book somewhere fast and it was very cheap and central.

Our experience: as soon as you turn off Market Street and onto Turk, things get *very* shady. We were 3 girls travelling alone with backpacks and felt not only uncomfortable but unsafe. The hostel has metal-barred gate and buzzer system, which speaks volumes. Even the door to go though to where the reception was had metal bars. By this point we were sufficiently horrified to want to leave, but we needed to put our bags down before leaving to make other plans so checked in to the double room.

Said room was on the shabby side of basic, but seemed clean enough. Not much inside to speak of. The service was also of a pretty low standard - the lady seemed confused when we tried to check in and handed us someone else's information as though we were checking out.

Needless to say, we cleared out of there ASAP. Walking the stretch of Turk St again to leave and then once more when we checked out (losing the night's room rate of $80 or so) we found the situation to be exactly the same. In a nutshell: highly intimidating. People huddled outside the hostel door in what appeared to be a drug deal etc.

Conclusion: I would discourage any readers from making the mistake we did for the sake of a cheap room. We came away feeling traumatised and down several taxi fares and the room rate, on top of which we had to pay for another (more expensive but infinitely nicer) hotel room.
