We heard about this place from the people at Tcho's, arguably San Francisco's best chocolate factory, and probably because Tcho's chocolate is used by Smitten. Both companies are uncompromising in the ingredients they use. What sets Smitten apart is the high tech means they use for producing ice cream. You order, and they freeze it up for you on the spot using liquid nitrogen, the result of which is an unbelievably creamy treat. It's also fun to watch it coming together in a cloud of mist. Moreover, the cones they use are also a cut above those used by other vendors ... these resemble waffle cones, but are melt in your mouth good. I like my ice cream straight, but Smitten's also offers really good toppings and other variations. If you are a fan of the unusual and an ice cream lover, this is one experience you want to make a special trip to experience. The place is a bit hard to spot, but is only a couple of blocks from City Hall on Octavia near the intersection with Hayes.
