“A pleasant stay in the heart of the city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

I give the Marines Memorial a solid B+.

The location, only a block above Union Square, is fabulous. Parking at a discounted rate can be had at a lot only half a block away.

The lobby and dining room was attractive; the service helpful without being overbearing; and military history and artifacts are everywhere to be studied and enjoyed. We took advantage of the business center, and a two hour daily happy hour (complete with live pianist) and full buffet breakfast with a 12th floor city view is included in the reasonable room rate.

The room was clean and just a bit drab, though the bed was thoroughly comfortable. I needed 2 beds, which was actually a bit difficult to find in the city, and these were true doubles. Other hotels, if they had 2 beds at all, had either a queen and a twin or 2 twins.

There is room for improvement for bathroom cleanliness and the quality of the in room coffee. That said, I would not hesitate to stay here again, and will recommend it to others.

Thank you for your very kind and fair review of our property. Within a couple of months.. We will be sprucing up our hotel rooms with new bed linens, curtains, pillows, upgraded coffee and sound systems. Our bathroom will be freshen up as well. We do this now in preparation for a major hotel room renovation that begins 2016. Again, thank you so much for the review.
Respectfully,
Michael Allen

First of all: I wouldn´t stay there again.

The room was like in a scary movie - absolutly NO DAYLIGHT. Just a huge wall in front. We turned all our lights on, but it was still dark - you thought, you are in den middle of the night. A change, we ask for, was impossible - fully booked. Some wallpapers came down and it smelled old.

The bathroom was very small - of course no daylight.

The fitnessclub - well... I tryed to use the pool. It has 3 rows - what means, with 3 people the pool is full - the is a public club, so there were a lot of people. It is not a wellness oasis, like you might think. Its like a public YMCA pool, no jacuzzi, the steam at womens area did not work.

The only god experience - but just for the view - was the restaurant on 12th floor. The staff was extremly unfriendly - in my point of view especially if you are not a member. As we thought, we could have a drink at 10.00 pm - the place was closed.

Last but not least - we mailed several times to get a late check out - flight back to Germany was at 9pm, so we thought 3 pm would be fine. They answered for free it is just 1pm available. We said, of course we pay the halfdayrate - but when we arrived - there was a late check out even for payment not available - we got the room to 1pm.

At least we left there about 270,00 Dollar for 1 NIGHT with parking, with breakfast - but with NO VIEW - NO LATE CHECK OUT - UNFRIENDLY STAFF. I´m absolutly sure - for this money you get much more and better places - even in SFO, go home with happiness and not frustrated like us.

Room Tip: Keep away! No Daylight in Standardroom.

We have been to San Francisco multiple times, but this time we had 3 nights and 3 full days to spend. The Marine Memorial Club is in a fairly central and extremely convenient location near Union Square. It was close to the cable car, the buses, and the subway. We took advantage of all modes of transportation including our rental car minus taxis. We ditched the car after our first full day in the city because, like most big cities, parking was expensive.

Our room was on the 5th floor and looked east down Sutter St., the street the hotel is on. The windows opened quite wide so we could enjoy the fresh air and sunny mornings. The setee in the room was comfortable so we could enjoy a glass of wine and appetizers and relax after a day of walking - up and down, and up and down, and . . .

The king size bed was comfortable and offered a large number and variety of pillows to choose from. We slept very well. Part of that is due to the fact that we heard nothing from the rooms on either side nor noise from the hall.

The closet was huge and contained the little fridge and coffee maker. The safe was in there, too.

While the bathroom was very clean and everything worked well, it showed its age and masculinity. They might think about renovating the bathrooms when they make any changes.

We took advantage of the included breakfast. It was a buffet, but the food tasted pretty good. The variety of choices was huge. One could be totally healthy or completely carb and fat heavy! The evening Happy Hour was also worth taking advantage. The view from the top of the building was pleasant and bright. It was a nice way to start to wind down the day. The pianist made it even more pleasant.

We did not take advantage nor even look at the fitness center on the lower level.

http://www.marineclub.com/ is the link to the hotel. Check it out. It was a great hotel, a great restaurant, room service was fairly quick and delivered with cheerfulness. We highly recommend this property.

Let me start by saying, this is an old private club and hotel, so if you want spacious, new surroundings, this will not be for you. For us, it was perfect. My husband, son and I stayed at the club, and totally enjoyed our experience. The morning breakfast buffet is way beyond the typical free breakfast of most hotels, plus it is served in a restaurant with full service, so there are servers pouring your coffee, juice and getting anything special for you that you need. (The scrambled eggs were always moist!). We enjoyed the restaurant with it's nice view of the city all mornings and even one evening. The room and bath room were kept clean and neat. The tribute to all branches of the military was especially nice (even the merchant marines during war time which included my grandfather who was a U.S. M. M. during WW II and the Korean War).

Room Tip: We were on a higher floor with a view to the east and toward the bay. Nice view and quiet.

My husband is active duty, so we stayed at this hotel for the active duty member rate $99 a night for the weekend. LOVED IT! A new hotel in the city for under 100 bucks a night?! Amazing. Free happy hour for hotel guests and the free breakfast is so good. Not that Continental bagels and juice breakfast like most hotels, really good breakfast! The hotel is centrally located. Loved it. Nice rooms and a lot of Military history. We live a few hours away and planning on stay there again in the summer!

Thank you so much for your review! The Marines' Memorial Association spends $1.3 million annually for our currently serving support program by offering complimentary membership and heavily discounted hotel rates to all members of our military that have the opportunity to visit the club. This is accomplished by the generous suuport of our veteran membership. Thank you for the kind words!

Great location 1 block away from Union square. They really pay attention to guests, clean, great breakfast thats included in the room price, happy hour for drinks, included with price of the room. Had dinner and it was really good with a beautiful view from the 12th floor. Visit the library when you are there lots of history. Always a great choice for us.

Room Tip: Suites are great for family

The location of this hotel is second to none.
We had a lovely room on the 8th floor. We had booked a queen room but we were upgraded . I e mailed them and asked for a high floor as my husband is a light sleeper, also a view if possible. I got a charming mail back almost by return saying no problem. The room was large and very nicely furnished, the bed was sublime. The most comfy bed I have EVER slept in on holiday. 10 out of 10 for bed comfort. Gorgeous soft bed linen and lots of soft pillows. The room was spotlessly clean.plenty of space for hanging clothes, even a walk in wardrobe which was great for storing bags.
The only thing that was slightly less than perfect was the breakfast. I do not eat dairy products or eggs. The choices were egg , milk, butter based no of which I can eat. There was friuit avail. Toast was available if you asked so I had toast every morning. There was every conceive able kind of milk except soy. That being said the food available was good quality, hot and plentiful .
There is a happy hour, well two in fact! Complimentary drinks for 2 hours, pretty much anything you wanted to drink. You could have as much or as little as you liked. The atmosphere in the bar was rocking. A very nice chap playing piano( request taken) added to the fun atmosphere. After happy hours we retired a couple of feet to the restaurant.lovely food, great wine, great atmosphere and at a reasonable price, a winner.
We loved this hotel, it's a bit quirky not your usual cookie cutter chain but that adds to the charm.
Would stay again and recomend it in a heartbeat
