“Where its strength is, lies its weakness”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2011

We have just returned home after a 10 day stay in America - 5 of these days where spent in Sanfrancisco at the Metropolis hotel.

This hotel has a great array of positives -

We got the shuttle in from the Airport fine and dandy, all well on that score. we checked in to be greated by a pleasant man, who highlighted that there would be complimentary tea and coffee served in the Library between 8am and 10am. Normally in the USA its room only nothing added extra at all. He also gave us a list of diners that would do breakfast.

The staff also highlighted we could have free wireless in our room, we used this to get onto our mobile phone and check places out, also there was a free computer to use, it was a little exra that really helped.

The rooms are fine, yes a bit plain and the soundproofing could have done with some attention, but always cleaned everyday.
The Location - here is where it wins and loses at the same time.
What a great location to get to anywhere in the city - on the F line your at fishermans wharf, take a bus ride to the coast, tale a walk and your at union square, the underground is just round the corner too, probably the best thing about the hotel is how it links in to other attractions and transport................................ But......heres the downside.

The whole place felt adgey, an undertone that could make you feel unsafe. I was clock watching most nights to get back to the hotel before dark.
The noise in the evenings also became frustrating from police sirens to people drumming and whailing in the early hours.
Many homeless and people that seemed kind of strange liked to hang around the place.....but this personally did not effect the stay and we would visit this hotel again.......

We stayed here for 4 nights in April. The hotel itself is fine although you must have to pay more for a view, as our room had a tiny window. Our room was not very well soundproofed as we could here the people's conversations next door. The Housekeeping staff also played lound music when cleaning the rooms. This is not very professional.
The service at the hotel was ok although a little uncaring and dismissive. One receptionist was more interested in reading his documents than talking to me.

The hotel is close to Union Square which is great however and this is a big HOWEVER the road the hotel is on or leads to Tenderloin. As two girls staying in this hotel we were very concerned about our safety having witnessed drug deals, people peeing on the doorstep of the hotel and gangs of street people hovering outside. This is one of the worst areas I have ever stayed in in the world for feeling like we would be mugged or stabbed! Noone behaved in a hostile manner towards us but if I was the hotel I would seriously do something about the corner the hotel is located on and try and clean it up.

Room Tip: Don't stay here if travelling alone

Hotel Metropolis was conveniently located for the John Mellencamp concert at the Warfield we attended on Saturday night, and the performance of Rain (a Beatles Tribute) that we attended at the Orpheum on Sunday afternoon, as well as for John's Grill for Saturday dinner and Lori's Diner for Sunday breakfast. The room was comfortable, obviously an older building with few electric plugs and a small bathroom. I found the bed too firm, but my husband felt it was just fine. The staff were pleasant and accommodating, valet parking was fairly reasonable (for SF), and best of all we were able to bring our 5-pound toy poodle for a $25/stay cleaning fee. Our room was the only one on the floor with a fire escape, so fortunately we didn't have to evacuate the entire floor through our room :)

Room Tip: Try for an upper floor, better views

For the price and location this is one of the best deals in the San Francisco. I paid 98.00 bucks a night for a Thursday and Friday. Now when I say location, please keep in mind it is steps from Union Square (great), but also steps from the Tenderloin (not so great). Now being so close to the Tenderloin doesn't bother me, but it is not for everyone so please keep that in mind. If you want a nice.. clean... basic room... in walking distance then yes. If you want luxury and spa and massage experience then skip the Metropolis and go pay $$$$$.

I really liked this hotel, small but it had everything I needed during my 1st. trip to SF. The complementary coffee bar starting at 07:00am got me started every day.

OK folks quit with the gripes about the neighborhood. You're in a city, a diverse city, get over it! This is a great hotel in a convenient location with small comfortable rooms and great showers. The staff was wonderful, the beds were comfy and it's an amazing value. Would definintely be back!

I stayed at the Metropolis Hotel while attending a conference last week. The hotel rooms are old and cheaply decorated but OK. The shower had lots of water flow at a good temperature, which is nice and the bed was confortable. And the room was big enough for a single person. However, I was not changed the soap or miniature toletries once in the whole week, which do not give a good impression. At night you could see the typical city noises such as sirens but on top of it, many homeless shouting and swearing, which was not particularly nice.

I was a woman travelling alone and it was quite intimidating walking at night after dinner back to the hotel. From Powell St towards Mason it starts to be dodgy but arriving at Turk (street of the hotel entrance) it was homeless central. The street was just plagged with homeless that although they do not seem extremely dangerous, were kind of mad and shouting and talking to you..... the really bad area is only about 20 meters from Mason to the entrace of the hotel. I will stay somewhere else next time!
