“Unexpected Disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2011

We're on a 2 1/2 wks trip to west coast of USA with San Francisco being our first stop. Booked Four Seasons throughout the trip based on recommendations from tripadvisor and others. Was looking forward to staying with Four Seasons due to the glowing reviews / reputation and it being our first time with the hotel chain.

Alas, when we checked into the room we found the room decor a bit tired and worse, there's this dubious patch on the carpet in front of the couch that's coloured, wet and sticky. Called the front desk to ask for a change of room - was put through to the front desk after 2 transfers, girl babbled something and before I caught what she said, hung up on me!!! When I called back again, was told they're "fully committed" so cannot offer a change of room but that they'd get housekeeping to come take a look. Didn't happen.

When we went for dinner, on the way we popped by the front desk and asked again. This time, the guy said the same thing - they're fully committed, but offered us a change of room the 2nd day, supposedly one on a higher floor. However, "the 2nd day" has passed but we've not received anything from the hotel and by now, we've pretty much settled in and too lazy to repack. But still, the quiet is disconcerting.

So yesterday we got housekeeping to get us a towel to cover up the gross patch so we won't step on that disgusting sticky substance (again!). They very nicely came and apologised etc. and said they'd have to do the cleaning with a machine and it'd take couple hours to dry. So we said fine, do it in the day time when we're out; When we came back today late afternoon, the room is all made up but the patch is still there! We had to call housekeeping again and this nice old man came with a bucket and spray and proceeded to try and remove it right there and then. Which is rather inconvenient for us but he was apologising all the way and really nice about it so that's not too bad. Finally he said they'd have to use a machine to get it cleaned properly and he'd make a note. Which is exactly what we were told yesterday and nothing got done!

I know this is not a serious matter and most of the hotel guys were accomodating and pleasant (except the first girl who hung up on me!!!). However, this is nothing I'd expect from a hotel such as the Four Seasons. Not the dubious sticky patch on the carpet and certainly not the messy, inefficient, ineffective followup that hasn't appeared to have solved anything at all up to now.

That being said, the bed's very comfy and the bathroom generously sized. And as we're celebrating our anniversary and hubby's birthday on this trip, they gave us complimentary sparkling wine and strawberries which were a very nice surprise (though not on the actual date, but that didn't matter).

I really wanted to love our stay at Four Seasons but up to now, that hasn't seemed possible.

Stayed in a suite with 2 young children. Check in superbly friendly and efficient, so hats off to the lovely young lady who helped out. Four seasons is a superb chain. Only couple minor hiccups means no 5 star rating. Sofabed wasnt made up for the kids after turndown at 8.20pm and we had to ask. We had to wait 15 mins and ask twice for any service at breakfast. When it came it was excellent but our section of the dining room was neglected. After asking for The kids ages to provide a small treat in the room there was nothing there. Not enough towels in the room and had to ask housekeeping. Having stayed at four seasons beverly hills on the same trip one could see the difference in service. It was very good in areas such as front door and check in and out but not top dollar. Still, the hotel is in a superb location, finishes are excellent and cleanliness ace. Would def return.

Loved everything about this hotel. I stayed here on business and brought my husband along for the ride. Check in was a breeze...as we entered the building, they called up to the front desk and by the time the elevator reached the lobby, someone greeted us, walked us to the front desk and got us checked in in record time. Our room was beautiful; large and spacious with a floor to ceiling window with a great view. There is also a very comfy window seat and the windows opened! The bathroom was marble with a shower and a separate oversized tub.

I had drinks in the lounge and ate several meals there during our meetings. One night I tried to book a late massage but they did not have any appointments left so the concierge arranged for an in room massage that was excellent.

The hotel is in a great location within walking distance to the Ferry Building, China Town, Coit Tower, etc. and public transportation is right outside the front of the hotel. I would stay here again anytime I visit San Fran! Thanks to the staff for all of the great service!

Food Tip: The Grove is a great place for breakfast or lunch which is about a block away from the hotel. Super yummy!

Great Hotel, perfectly located. Great Service. Steps from major business and shopping, you can even walk to the piers, fisherman's wharf etc... Concierge was so good that in the restaurants we went they gave us a special gift (drink, snack etc..) from the concierge and that was a great gesture.

This is the model other hotels should follow. The staff was friendly but professional and were obviously very well trained. The room was excellent. The restaurant was first class. I cannot think of one single thing that was not right.

Room Tip: Book the stay through American Express Platinum Service.

The hotel was in a great downtown location (on Market, 2 minutes from Westfield), right in the centre and close to all transport links for the city. The interior lobbies and lounges had a spacious, elegant feel, like stepping out of the bustle into order and calm.

We had an Executive Suite on the 17th floor for our 3-day stay, visiting relatives. It was a spacious area with stunning views across the city towards the Bay in the distance. Our two daughters had one room (with a double sofa bed) and we had the other adjoining room (with a king-size bed) which included the bathroom. The suite was well-appointed, extremely clean and (because of the enormous picture windows in both rooms) very light and airy. The bathroom was to die for. A nice touch was the bowl of fruit and the personalised ‘Welcome’ card from the hotel manager.

We didn’t eat in the hotel (other than a ‘room service’ breakfast, on one of the mornings) but we used the lounge for afternoon tea, pre-dinner drinks and late evening nightcaps. It was a very pleasant space in which to sit and relax, and the staff were extremely (but not annoyingly) attentive.

We used the Health Club on one occasion. It was very well-equipped (with a reasonable-sized pool) and on two floors. However, we felt it was more like a city fitness centre than a part of the hotel, so we didn’t feel sufficiently relaxed there – especially compared with all the other club members, who were taking it very seriously!

We were particularly impressed with the staff in the hotel. From the Chambermaid to the Concierge, every member of staff we encountered was polite, friendly and made us feel a welcome guest. Nothing appeared too much trouble and a call to Reception produced a knock on the door within five minutes.

We did feel that, given the cost of the accommodation, WiFi in the room could have been provided free of charge. We also felt that tea/coffee-making facilities could have been provided in the room. Yes, it was a simple matter to pick up the phone and order it from room service, but we would have preferred the flexibility and immediacy of doing it ourselves.

Although the hotel was expensive, we felt it represented good value for money because of the quality of the service and accommodation it provided.

Room Tip: Study their website 'Accommodations' section before booking & ring to confirm floor leve...

This property was in a very central location, but at night very quite! Beautiful big rooms, had lunch in dining room, it was fabulous and they also have a very nice bar area that serves food. The main dining room is closed on Monday night. They have there wine list on Ipad, which is ingenious. They are connected to a fitness club, which you can use, it is amazing. I had a deep tissue massage while I was there, and it was one of the best I have had. They even off Thai massage which I love but need the deep tissue.
