“disconcerting”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

we got a room here for the weekend to celebrate my friend's 50th birthday. for the most part, it was a great central location! however, saturday night, upon arriving back (just three adults) in the wee hours of the morning, we got a knock on the door immediately telling us we were not allowed to talk in our room this late, we needed to 'chat in the lobby'. we were not being loud, we didn't have the music on and we didn't have the TV on. normal conversation. not 20 minutes later, again, they knocked on our door telling us we couldn't be talking in our rooms at this hour. for $200 a night, i will do whatever i damn well please when it is normal talking level, and nothing like teenagers whoop it up with hooting and hollering. i have never been in a hotel where i was told we were not allowed to chat in our room at 3am because it was too loud? we are in an area paying GOOD money, i wouldn't stay there again if our lives depended on it. that was just disrespectful and rude.

then lets add the next morning when someone tried to barge in at 9am (after going to bed late!), something about the minibar?? (never touched it) then we asked for a late check out with 2 more attempts at housekeeping to get in (even with the privacy sign). couldn't sleep because all i could hear was housekeeping knocking on other's doors and the slamming of the doors constantly.

First time in San Francisco. Booked this hotel literally the day before arrival and got a great rate through hotels.com.

Front desk and concierge service was exceptional - staff was very helpful with directions around the city and recommendations for restaurants. Everyone was very friendly and seemed to genuinely want to help you. Room was very well kept and had a large bathroom. Only negative was no refrigerator, but on the plus side they do have free morning coffee and leave out fresh fruit and cold tea during the afternoon.

Location is great-- very easy walk to Chinatown and just a slightly longer, but still easy, walk to the Ferry Building and Union Square. Valet parking is pricey but not out of line with other SF hotels and there are lots in the immediate area where you can save a little bit. Close to BART if, like me, you prefer public transporation whenever possible.

Highly recommended.

From the time we arrived at the front door until we checked out the service was exceptional. The front desk staff were very knowledgable, friendly and acted as great tour guides. Door men, valets, housekeeping staff and Restaurant staff very friendly. Highly recommend staying there, beautiful establishment.

I selected the Omni San Francisco for my most recent stay in San Francisco and was not disappointed. Many of the positives have already been mentioned earlier in reviews. What made this stay wonderful was the fact that the Ms. Tjandra commemorated my stay with a surprise birthday bottle of wine, two slices of chocolate birthday cake, and a nice card congratulating me on my special celebration. This is definitely something that made the stay a most memorable one and one that is not common when staying at large hotels within the US. Thank you, Ms. Tjandra.

As already mentioned by others, the room is quite traditional but very nicely decorated. The bathroom was quite large and the bed was a very restful experience. I love the fact that coffee and a second beverage is provided each morning for up to two individuals staying in the same room.

What makes this hotel stand out is the staff. What a wonderful and warm team! Even a couple of the frontline people remembered me and addressed me by my family name. This is definitely a great touch.

The only thing that could have been improved upon was the dusting. Since I have allergies, I'm quite sensitive to dust. The phones in the room had dust which means they are not dusted on a regular basis. If the housekeeping staff could pay more attention to the dusting, this would have been most ideal for someone like myself.

Thank you for a wonderful stay, Omni San Francisco! I'll definitely be staying with you again in the future.

Room Tip: The Signature Room is a great option since you have accommodations on one of the top three floors wi...

My wife and I live in the Bay Area, but we occasionally stay overnight in the city after a night on the town. We tried the Omni this time, and we weren't disappointed. The lobby and the room had an old-school elegant feel without being dated or run down... lots of dark wood and marble everywhere. We used the pre-arrival check-in, so our key was waiting on a rack when we arrived. However, we still felt welcomed as the doormen greeted us and another staff member gave us gingerbread cookies on our way to the elevator. After dropping off our bag, we had drinks in the bar. These were fine, but very expensive.
The Omni is in the middle of financial district, which is not as convenient as Union Square or SoMa if you want to be close to shopping and nightlife, but still close enough to walk to those areas.
Check-out was as quick as arrival. As with most big hotels, the bill was under the door in the morning, so we just had to drop off our key. Still, one of the bellmen in the lobby noticed us at the key box and made a point of saying goodbye. All in all, a first-rate hotel experience.

Room Tip: 11th floor room had a view of the city but no famous landmarks.

Positives: The service is second to none. The location is fabulous. The price was fantastic through Travelocity. Complimentary champagne in the evening was a nice touch. We needed someone to uncork our wine and they actually sent someone up to the room to do it for us.

Negative: Their coffee machine was down and therefore was unable to make a latte for us (Really not a big deal since there was a Starbucks right around the corner).

I would stay here again for sure!

I made reservations at the Omni largely because of the predominately very good reviews on Tripadvisor. However, we encountered a stream of problems. First, after making reservations on Orbitz, I had a work conflict develop. Almost a week ahead of time, I tried to change the reservations. Not cancel, change. Here was the deal for us: if we wanted to change our reservations, they would keep ALL of the money. I know that there are different deals and specials. But despite asking Orbitz, who even talked to a shift supervisor at the Omni, and calling back the next day and trying ourselves, the deal was, for two rooms at two nights each "if you change the reservation, the cancellation fee is 100% of both nights for both rooms". It makes me wonder if they put people on mute and laugh "buawahhhaha" right after telling this to guests.

As a frequent traveler, I was surprised. Even when there are stated policies like this, if someone wants a change almost a week in advance for different days with a decent reason, I haven't seen others try to keep all the money for all the nights as a change fee. Doing so has a tendency to have travelers never stay there again, tell their friends, tell their coworkers, and put bad reviews on Tripadvisor. Seems like exactly the kind of thing Omni's owner TRT Holdings in Irving TX might want to consider changing.

So, I had to miss my business appointment. Still, I might not have given this hotel such a poor rating. But other things went wrong, especially at the concierge desk. Despite going to the concierge desk four times from Friday afternoon Nov 30th to Sunday morning, Dec 2nd, we didn't actually talk to a concierge.

Instead, it was mostly the front desk people. Not particularly good at restaurant recommendations or how to get there, which was important because it was rainy and windy.

We asked about tour buses, and they struggled. When we chose a tour company, they called the company to ask what hours they were running (probably a good idea on a rainy day). They gave us some nice-looking discount vouchers, which didn't say how much of a discount they would provide. The vouchers have shiny copy-protection things on them like old school retail software packages. They kept them in special boxes, and they are numbered for tracking.

However, when we went to use them, one of the four vouchers had, according to the tour company, already been used. Two of them we did not get any credit for, because they gave us two "family" vouchers, which are meant for children, not adults. We had four adults and those two were useless. Four vouchers, one actual discount.

The hotel staff also didn't know there were two nearby places for pickup, both about a quarter mile away. They directed us to Stop 5 on the Big Bus map, near Embarcadero. Not knowing if the tour would be any good in the rain, we went to Stop 18 instead, Hotel Triton near Chinatown. That had the advantage of us seeing Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, and the waterfront near Downtown first. It also made for an easy return to the hotel if weather was awful. Hotel Triton has a large awning so that waiting in the rain is ok.

The Big Bus tour was good, considering it was rainy and windy at the beginning, and fairly cold most of the trip.

When walking back to the hotel, if you aren't using your GPS keep in mind that the arrow showing the Omni Hotel is in the wrong place on their own map that the front desk or concierge will give you. Their citywide map shows the Omni located on Montgomery between Clay and Sacramento Street. What's actually there? Not the Omni, but rather the Pacific Heritage Museum. Luckily, this struck me as odd, and I used the GPS on my phone. The entrance for the Omni is on California just uphill from Montgomery Street.

The Omni is one of those hotels that thinks it's a cool idea to charge $10 for internet access.

The good parts were: decent snacks like gingerbread cookies and warm cider in the lobby when it was cold. Apples and pears at other times of the day. There are good restaurants nearby in Belden Place. If you are there during the week, directly across from the Hotel in the bottom of the 555 Montgomery is Saint Germain Crêperie. Very good, but that location is only open M-F.

The fitness center has good equipment, and everything worked in our room.
