Among the many choices to stay in San Francisco, the Omni stood out in the reviews. That prompted me to book a night there for a quick trip my wife and I had planned.
Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by every single hotel staff person we encountered, with offers of help and welcome. This was not done in any overbearing way and felt quite genuine. Our room was on the 14th floor.
The room was very nice, clean, and very quiet. We hadn't opted for a view and indeed were given the opportunity to look into office windows of the three buildings surrounding the alley courtyard behind our side of the hotel. The TransAmerica Building could be seen soaring high above one of them. It was sunny and well-lit, so we weren't disappointed by that.
A little background: Our last hotel, two weeks earlier, had been in Beijing, China. The contrast couldn't have been greater. A 4-star hotel, it looked very fancy at first glance (and from 20 feet away). A closer inspection was almost horrifying. The place was absolutely filthy. In the 8 days we stayed there, our sheets were never changed, the bathroom always smelled like a sewer, and our clean fingernails at night were dirty upon getting up in the morning. The bed must have been made of concrete, and the lock on the entry door didn't work. So by contrast, the Omni was absolutely a wonderful place.
Mind you, this comparison is quite unfair, in that the Omni should not be described with any association with the other hotel. The Omni stands in its own right as a fine hotel, a world-class hotel, with a staff that went out of its way at every opportunity to serve us with a smile and no hesitation.
Location-wise, it is terrific. Sited at the intersection of Montgomery and California, it is about 6-blocks from the Ferry Building, next door to China Town, the California Cable Car runs by the front door, and Nob Hill is just to the west, up the street. All the major cultural and performance centers are within easy walking access and restaurants are all over the place.
We slept soundly, enjoyed the lovely clean, nicely scented bathroom, and comfortable clean (did I say clean?) bed. There was a large safe in the closet and a locking refrigerator where we kept snacks bought at a nearby deli.
I highly recommend the Omni and will stay there again if I have the chance.
