“Eclectic shops and people watching”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2013

Walk through the Haight Street (Haight Ashbury area) and you will find something that speaks to you. Neat vintage shops, friendly shop keepers, eclectic crowd, variety of cafes and bars. We took a bus to get there and walked the street on a Friday night. Part of the San Francisco experience.

“Flower Power Time Warp”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013

I'd recommend a quick driving tour at least to take in the colorful murals, store fronts, and street people. Although commercialized, this area still seems frozen in time with a counter-culture feel. Cafes, coffee houses, and vintage shops abound. The second Sunday in June is reserved for the Haight Street Festival and street fair, a perfect venue for capturing the ambiance of peace, love, & music.

“I guess you have to, but it is underwhelming”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

We went to say we saw it, and we are both fans of 60's music and art, however that being said... this area had it's time in the 60's. Everything left behind is commercialized for new age hippies and the old relics who are stuck in the 60's. It is dirty and unimpressive. And the street kids were quite obnoxious. Go, see, stop in the record store, and then head back out. The Haight is was past its prime.

“Cool street”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

This street exceeded my expectations. Hadn't heard much about the area. Great little shops, cafes, bars, etc. The storefronts are colorful and some have great murals. Tons of people out and about. Dead ends into Golden Gate Park so easy to combine with a trip to the park. There's a lot of rock n roll history to the area, based on my guidebook that had a walking tour of the area. There's a masive music store towards the west end of the street. Enjoyed this area much more than Misson/Castro areas. Would go back to this street; wouldn't go out of my way to go back to Misson/Castro areas.

Buena Vista Park is in the area too. Great park with awesome views of the city (note - steep climb up to see the views)!

“good shopping but lots of offers to sell us hash”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We started our walk on Masonic and Haight. There is a great brew pub there called Magnolia with excellent food and great service.
The shopping along Haight walking toward Golden Gate Park was very interesting and some stores were not overly expensive. Lots of second hand shops, music shops, rockabilly clothing, and skateboard shops.
The busiest intersection was unsurprisingly the corner of Haight and Ashbury where tourists where trying to snap up original unique pictures of the two street signs intersecting.
The crowds of young hippies living in a 20 year time warp was interesting at first, and some, like the youngish man playing guitar on the corner of Haight and Masonic, were quite friendly but I have to admit that there was a bit of a menacing feel to some of them. I got the impression that some of them were impatient of all the ignorant tourists. oh well, at least if we wanted to buy some hash, we would have had no trouble since someone wanted to sell us some on every block we walked down. I was kind of hoping and expecting to actually see some real live original hippies from the late 60's. I know they would be in their 60's and 70's now, but that would have been cool.
