Alcatraz was sold out so we were pointed toward Angel Island which turned out to be a welcomed surprise. If you're at all an outdoor kind of person this is a sweet gem and we happened to hit it when everything was closed. The one and only cafe, bike rentals, the island tram...ALL closed on the island. Good thing we're hikers because there was no other choice and for the folks who were older or had small children - and weren't informed to rent bikes on the mainland, got off the boat only to find out their feet would be the only way to get anywhere. That had to be tough.
For us, we hiked over to the Immigration Museum, ($5) and hiked through the hills on the Sunset trail back to the dock. All of it was beautiful and interesting to say the least. They are re-doing the hospital within the Immigration compound so that should be another worthwhile addition to the immigration story.
Even if the cafe is open - bring lunch/snack so you can eat midway. There are several picnic benches with panoramic views. We huffed it pretty good to make the loop around the island stopping for a good chunk of time at the Immigration offices and got back with 20 minutes to spare before the boat arrived for pick up.
A unique place to visit in San Francisco and a lovely boat ride in the bay. We loved it.
