I went to Angel Island only because I was late in buying my ticket to Alcatraz and the only one available was the combined tour. What a blessing in disguise, because I'd have missed this awesome place otherwise. I was fortunate too that the day I managed to get tickets for was a clear spring day with gorgeous blue skies.
The island has a lot of wonderful places for one to take photos with San Francisco in the background. It also has a bit of history to it, so those of you who love historical facts should take one of the tram tours and ask the operators as much as you can! There are also a lot of beautiful plants and flowers for nature lovers!
The boat ride from Pier 33 takes you past Alcatraz Island and there's a great photo opportunity to snap pics with the prison in the background, too. The cafe on the island is not bad, their signature pork sandwich is pretty good after a morning tour!
If you're taking both the Angel Island and Alcatraz tour, it might be a bit of a rush if you have to head to Alcatraz after Angel Island because of the ferry schedules, especially if you take the tram tour which is about an hour.
I have to say I found Angel Island more enjoyable than Alcatraz, despite the latter being the more famous of the two. I'm definitely looking forward to going back to San Francisco and spending a bit more time on this island and maybe having a picnic this time around.
