“Great food, grumpy waitress”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2012

We've gone here 20 times.... really enjoy the Pho, and the beef is good, pork chops good too.
The one waitress is always grumpy and when it's crowded your chair will bumped 50 times... but it's the food that counts. Good family restaurant.

“A Local Lunch Spot”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2012

I come here with my office which is nearby probably once every other month. The place has good Vietnamese food, not as good as similar places in the Tenderloin, but more clean and less sketchy neighborhood. Parking is tough at dinner hours but lunch is doable. Don't bother with the Pho Challenge, it's more soup and noodles (filler) than anything substantial, unless you win and then you get a great big bowl with your stomache. All the soups are not Vietnamese Mother tasty but since I don't have a Vietnamese Mother (a fellow worker does and she was not that impressed) I think it's pretty good value for the money.

“Best in the City?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2011

Its a good variety of Pho soups from the simple Pho Ga to the more complex seafood phos. The difference here is the spices are plentiful and fresh. You can eat free here if you are able to finish off the super bowl of Pho soups--its a challange. The atmosphere is casual.

“Home of the Pho Challenge!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2011

My friends surprised me by taking me to this restaurant to try their pho challenge. It cost $22 for a bowl of Dac Biet Pho that consisted of 2lbs of meat and 2lbs of noodles. If you finish it within 1 hour, you get it for free and the bowl to take home as a trophy. If you lose, you used to get a t-shirt but now they give out water bottles. The pho was average and the bun bo hue noodles were bland. Needed to add salt to everything except the spring rolls. They were delicious. It was the first restaurant that has ever served spring rolls with lettuce wraps, vermicelli noodles and herbs. I'd go back just to see friends try and eat 4lbs of food and the spring rolls.

“big portions, small price: come with your appetite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2010

This little restaurant is a local gem, specializing in Vietnamese rice noodle soup. On my first visit I got a huge bowl (I'm guessing it was about a quart) of the seafood noodles with shrimp, squid, fishcake, and scallops for under $10. The second time I got the crab noodle soup, which was similar except no squid, just lumps of delectable crab meat, also under $10. Both were marvelously tasty. You also get the traditional platter of Chinese parsley, bean sprouts, and lime slices to add to your hot bowl of soup. We always leave this restaurant stuffed and warm enough to face the foggy chill from the Bay.

I should add Pho Garden is known for its Pho Garden Challenge, in which a brave diner is served a gigantic bowl of beef pho, supposedly enough for three servings. If you finish the whole bowl in less than an hour, the pho is on the house, and you get your photo taken and hung on the wall of champions. I've never tried this simply because I can barely finish one serving of pho here. But this is the perfect place to go if you're hungry but don't have a lot to spend on dinner.
