“Great Indian”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

We came across this gem during the cold light of day so we had chance to have a good look at it before returning for dinner. As mentioned the area is seedy but knowing what to expect we weren't put off. The restaurant has an on view kitchen, which is always a good sign. The layout is basic but clean an well kept. I have eaten Indian cuisine all over the world (including India) and this rates as one of the better ones. Simple Indian dishes well cooked and well presented. Only critism is they could do with warming the plates. Good food. Good value

“home cooked indian”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

my wife and i are living in a small town in oregon. we have very limited restaurants mostly mexicans, chineese, steak house. in our trip to san francisco we decided to try ethnic food. so for our first night we decided on indian food. we asked the receptionist at our hotel. she recommended "urban curry" short drive by taxi.
the restaurant is not very elegant but very confortable. open kitchen. we were greeted wery well. the food is fantastic. since the prices were reasonable we ordered a fiew appetisers, samosa, shrimp battered in cheakpeas, eggplant and for entrees ordered lamb curry, goat karahi, and chicken curry. all were delicious. total with soft drinks and naan bread under $ 40 for 2. i highly reccomend

“The food is better than the neighborhood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

Kind of sketchy area on Broadway near Columbus, strip clubs, youth hostel etc. But Stinking Rose is right around the corner, lots of regular-looking pedestrians about, so I wasn't particularly scared as a woman walking alone at night. The Urban Curry staff were nice, and the food was freshly made to order, served piping hot. Delicious daal, though they must have pureed the lentils because it was brothy but with an astounding blend of seasonings making it very tasty but no spicy-hot. Lamb shishkabob came with sizzling onions and red and green peppers, very nice with the garlic naan. $14 total for the 3 dishes. Overall quite good if you are in the area, but don't go out of your way to eat there.

“Excellent food, but shady location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012

The food was delicious. I'm not vey tolerable of spicy food but the chicken curry was great, the naan was fresh, and there was complimentary tea. The self service for utensils and water was a little weird for me, I was wondering why they couldn't just have the waiters do that. But great food for reasonable prices. Lastly, we rode the bus from fisherman's wharf... and the walk from the bus stop to the restaurant was very unpleasant, for the street being full of strip clubs at every block and creepy men standing on the outside wanting to lure customers in, and gangster looking groupies walking around. This was probably the scariest experience i've ever had walking on city streets. Be sure to go with a buddy, a male buddy would be helpful, and I would suggest going in daylight.

“Hit or Miss Indian in North Beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2010

I had a taste for Indian near Union Square, so we ended up at this Indian/Pakistani restaurant in North Beach. The keema naan was delicious; it is listed with chicken, but can also be made with lamb. The tandoor chicken was good, while the tikka masala was disappointing. The service was un-attentive, so I won't be in a rush to go back.
