“One of the world's great opera companies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

Ok, it is not the Met,but nothing is. It is an excellent opera company. They have really upgraded the singing in the past 5 years and you can see some of the world's great opera stars perform here. I think the casts are very even as well, so you don't have a stand-out star, with a mediocre supporting cast.

If you like to go to cultural events when you travel and you can get tickets during the season ( Sept-Dec and then June) you will not be disappointed. Besides, the opera house is beautiful. If you are from Europe, don't be shocked at the casual dress of the audience. It ranges from jeans to Armani.

If you are here in September, there are some fun, casual special events like Opera in the Park and Opera at the Ballpark.

“Love the Opera & Ballet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

2 latest operas I have seen & heard...

THE MAGIC FLUTE-(Die Zauberflöte), Mozart...4 stars..."the people's opera."

Before the performance it was announced Papagino had a cold but would carry on. While good, his singing was a little thin. The roles of Pampina, Papageno, & Papagina were sung well, yet average. Sarastros was sung very well. Albina Shagimuratova's performance as The Queen of the Night was amazing! Her rendering of The Queen's signature aria in Act 2, alone is worth the price of admission.

The set designs by Jun Kaneko are entertaining & fun. Much better than the dark & dreary sets I saw in another company's Magic Flute production.

NIXON IN CHINA, John Adams...5+ stars.

When I heard John Adams' compositions played by the SF Symphony I was hooked. I had to see & hear this SF Opera production.

It was outstanding in every way. The Opera orchestra played masterfully, all the singers were outstanding, & the ballet dancers performing the "Detachment of Red Women" were a joy to watch. My personal favorites...Hye Jung Lee as Madame Mao, Simone O'Neill as Chairman Mao, & Chiharu Shibata as the woman ballet dancer.

“3rd time's a charm”

After a third attempt, my GF and I were able to take a fifteen minute "Glimpse" tour. Beautiful space. We wished we could take a behind-the-scenes tour.

“Wonderful.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

My girlfriend and I went to see Atilla. WOW. I have been going to the SF Opera for years, and I am laways impressed. Even the Opera Cafe has an amazing Buffet. Because of the caliber of the Italian operas that SF puts on, I will be an ever loyal Patron.

“try the cafe before the show”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

Easy to get to from the Wharf by bus. 1st floor of Opera building has full sit down meal option as well as a cafe with bar and sandwiches. You can pre order your refreshment for intermission! The Magic Flute was delightful; a complete departure from what we expected for the set, very unusual oriental flavor that was visually exciting...like eye candy! Fabulous orchestra. Wonderful cast. We love Nathan Gunn as Papagano.
