“Really more like a cafeteria...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

The De Young Gallery in Golden Gate Park is great and has a good food place. But at the Science Academy situation is really different. The Academy is like Dante's 9th ring when it's busy... noisy, poor food, and messy tables.
We thought the Moss Room, the upscale place downstairs, would be better. Well it LOOKS better... but inattentive service, a premium price, some very average cooking, and a very limited menu made it not a great deal. $100 for two two course meals. And some wine that smelt like it had been open for a while. Shame since the museum is great. Eat at De Young over the square!

“Sea of calm in Academy mob scene”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

The Academy gets real crowded on holidays & weekends. In fact it's a madhouse by noon. What a great time to get away from the mob seen by having lunch at the Moss Room. Run by Charles Phan of Slanted Door fame. I was somewhat disappointed, the Slanted Door is one of my favorite places & the menu wasn't as creative as I expected. I like the local, in season focus and all of the food was good except the crispy brussel sprouts which seemed closer to burnt than crispy. Especially liked the beet salad & pork chop. 2 appetizers, 5 entrees, 2 beers, 2 glasses of wine, 2 coffees, 2 soft drinks was $219 w/SF health tax, sales tax and 20% tip. Academy members get a 10% discount.

“Limited Pricey Menu in Seclusion from Bedlam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

The Moss Room is a quiet sanctuary downstairs from the museum cafeteria, which houses a steady chaotic influx of patrons. Although the menu is fairly limited and pricey ($9 for soup and $14 for a burger), the food was fresh and well prepared. A fish tank adorns one wall. Service is friendly, the dim lighting refreshing, and the experience invigorating after immersing oneself in museum crowds.

“Pastries”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

We enjoyed their cinnamon pastry and ham/cheese croissant. The coffee was terrible!
A good snack but wouldn't rely on their food for a proper meal.

“Excellent ambiance, service, food for not much more than the cafe.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012 via mobile

Excellent ambiance, service, food for not much more than the cafe. I got the gnocci, everything was fresh and flavorful. I finished the whole plate! So good I decided to order dessert - panna cotta and carmelized oranges. My only complaint is the dessert portion was too small.

Again, price similar to or a couple more dollars than the cafe, yet the cafe was hectic and very much like a zoo. The moss was relaxed, quiet, upscale, and the living wall was also a treat.
