From the moment you walk into the Big 4 you know it's a special place. Friendly greeting by the doorman followed by suave attention by the Maitre'D. Dark woods and plushness everywhere guarantees comfort. The bar area was buzzing the night I dined here with singles, couples and groups happily chatting over their drinks. Arm chairs and little sofas with small tables made for an cozy environment. I understand there is a nice bar menu to choose from, but I was here for a full fledged dinner.
As this is San Francisco the competition in restaurants is very keen. While I would not rate this the best in the city (there's too many great restaurants to choose from) nevertheless it was very very good. Service was friendly without being too chummy, waitress knew the menu thoroughly and was able to offer good wine recommendations. So, we're off to a good start.
I'm a sucker for ocean scallops so I order that whenever it's offered. The presentation here was first rate; scallops cooked perfectly and served on a bed of crunchy taro-like chips with sweet corn and vegetables in a light saffron cream sauce. Delicious. Starter was Italian wedding soup, ok but not great. As we were going elsewhere after dinner I skipped dessert so can't comment on that.
What sets this place apart is the wonderful ambience, great service and the feeling that you're in Old San Francisco with quirky meorabilia on the walls, baronial sytle of furniture and fittings and just the overall clubby atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.
