“Way too crowded”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2008

After a $25 cab ride, we did not even get into the museum. The line was truly at least 200 people long just to get tickets. The lobby was a madhouse. I am sure there were many fine works in the museum, but we left without seeing them. I figured if it was this crazy in the lobby, the bulk of the museum would be overcrowded as well. FYI, we were there on a Sunday afternoon. I would definitely recommend trying the place on a weekday morning.

“Amazing Building, Gardens, Views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2008

The de Young is a must-see architectural gem both inside and out. The gardens are wonderful and the art in them make for a special experience. The Andy Goldsworthy entry piece is a perfect first impression. I hated Chihooly but others seem to love it - but that's the great thing about good museums - it is always changing and there will be new experiences (and yes, some will be inappropriate for kids but we adults need something too!)...Don't miss the tower observation floor with the stunning views of the Park!

“Loved the building!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2008

Not being able to visit Bejing this summer, we were looking forward to seeing Herzog and de Meuron's work in San Francisco. It's very menacing and looks massive and heavy, but the spaces inside are light and airy. Climbing up the tower for magnificent views over the city is a must and the adjacent science museum which is due to open next year looks like it'll be a treat too. I'm not a fan of the age and style of art to which the de Young is dedicated but it was crowded so is clearly popular. The area immediately around the museum is buzzing with open air recitals, art displays and people just hanging out which creates a great atmosphere. Parking is relatively inexpensive in the underground lot or free on street if you can find a space. Inspite of not caring for the art it contains, I'd still make it a San Francisco must-see!

“Chihuly at the de Young- Wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2008

I went specifically for the Dale Chihuly glass-art exhibit at the de Young Museum this summer (2008)-- fantastic, worth the extra $5 admission. Blazing colors and shapes, displayed in darkened rooms, made for tricky photography, and drew awed whispers from the visitors.
Check your bags and coats at the cloakroom, and keep your children close- the Chihuly rooms are crowded, and the glass works are right out there, within arm's reach.
The artworks I saw in the other rooms were puzzling, amusing, thought-provoking, and really deserved more time that I gave them. Staff at the de Young were friendly, and a spotless bathroom, on-site indoor/outdoor cafe, and free coat-check were bonuses.
The de Young is in Golden Gate Park, which has lots of other things to see, is a couple of blocks from public transportation, and there are lots of shops and affordable restaurants nearby.
