“It's all about the location here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2014

The location right at the gate to China Town is what makes this hotel good. We've been here for 8 days and the room is very basic. No aircondiioning, no fridge and no benchspace in the bathroom to put toiletries, no tea/coffee making facilities in our room either, and 1 double bed; however the location helps to compensate for those drawbacks. Tea/coffee is available free in the lobby, and ice is too. There's a safe. And there's a ceiling fan, along with a window which opens. The view is of a brick wall from an another property, but we have no problem with street noise. So balanced with the reasonable price, we're satisfied. It's not fancy, but it's clean and in a top spot. Who spends their time in San Francisco in their hotel room anyway eh?! There's no restaurant or fitness centre but it's surrounded by places to eat.

Absolutely perfect location. Near everything in the city. Me and my 2 kids and husband stayed here for 3 nights and were able to walk to everything. Clean, nice staff, big bathroom great views and value. They even had a crib set up in our room for the baby. Safe area , I would stay again in a heartbeat!

This hotel is in an excellent position, two yards away from China Town and a few minutes away from Union Square and just as close to good shopping! The hotel is well run by really nice personnel. There is free wifi and the 'towel figures each night are delightful. The rooms are excellent and spacious. The lift is a little old!! Well worth a visit

Room Tip: We had a room for 3 people and it was very spacious and quiet

As a first-timer to San Francisco who was overwhelmed by the cost of lodging in the city, I found this to be in my budget and it reminded me of the room in my residence hall freshman year - which was a lot better than other dorm rooms I saw on other college campuses. It's a very cute property in an old-fashioned building.

There isn't breakfast but there is a Starbucks two doors up and a local coffee shop across the street, which worked out well for us. The front desk was helpful and allowed us to check our bags on our last day there, as our flight didn't leave until later that night.

Plus, each day when you come back to your hotel, it's not just clean - there is also a different animal made from towels every day. We were greeted by swans, a snail and an elephant!

Room Tip: Ask for a hotel room that faces Grant Street, which overlooks the Chinatown gates.

A lot of reviews stress "you get what you pay for," which is very true for the Baldwin Hotel and almost every other hotel on the planet.

You could look for another hotel, but the Baldwin is perfect. You are a block away from the famous Chinatown. Five blocks from the nearest muni/Bart station (I have to say, SFO's public transit is extremely convenient). And walking distance to numerous shops and restaurants. Other reviews stress location, and I am definitely doing the same.

The primary purpose of our trip was to see the Giants play. It's about a 5 minute walk and then a 15 minute train ride to the ball park. This hotel was extremely convenient for our trip. As well, it's very functional for a couple.

Other reviews seem to stress small rooms and bathrooms. This is slightly the case, however, you do get used to it. For us, the room was good enough for relaxing and sleeping after a long day of exploring San Fran. The rooms were clean and you definitely get that "European" hotel style feeling. We had a standard queen room, it works for a couple, not sure how the other rooms are. The bed seemed on the newer side along with the decor. The bathroom sink was small, but there was a medicine cabinet for storage. As well, the hair dryer was in the drawer in the bedroom.

The only two issues with the room was that it was noisy and no AC. Every morning at about 4am there was a garbage truck picking up and dropping a bin very loudly. It didn't bother us much for the four nights we were there, however it is something to consider. Additionally, on weekends it's pretty noisy to about midnight, something else to consider. The no AC is something, which seems to be common with many of the hotels in San Fran. As someone that likes the room to be cool, it was bearable to have the windows open. The nights in San Fran for May are pretty cool and I had no problems with it being to warm when sleeping. The only issue I had was in the morning, the sun beat down on our room and it became pretty warm.

Additionally, staff was friendly and helpful. Overall, it was a cute little hotel and we WOULD stay their again if we went to San Fran again.
