I stayed here for 3 nights last week . Hotel is on very good location . Its located just in front of the china town . starbucks is on the door step . powell street station , cable car station and union square is only 5 min walk so you dont need a car . westfield mall, macys , target and other big desighner stores are just few min walk . Its very convenient place to stay n neighbourhood is very safe . The room was very clean but bathroom was very very clean , i am very particular about cleanliness and i found it was very clean . n cleaner used to do good job with towel making different animals everyday . The only problem is that if you are light sleeper you can hear the traffic and dustbin lorry early in the morning . very friendly and helpful staff . so if you are looking for reasonable price accomdation in good , safe and convenient location then this is the place .

First off, this hotel has many things to like, its located just in front of the Chinatown gate, 2min to union square (where you get to shop at Macy's, Niemen Marcus, get cable car tickets etc.) 5-10min from Moscone West Convention centre (for conference goers), a minute from a starbucks, subway and 7-11 outlets, 5mins from Walgreens grocery store and couple of mins from two Thai restaurants I love to eat at.

The staff here are polite and room service is prompt. Heating is good. Rooms come with TV, fan to keep you cool during summer, and decent bathroom with constant hot water (as opposed to intermittent). The lobby provides free coffee and tea.

All is not well though, like several hotels in the area, noise from drunks and traffic can be a problem for light sleepers, esp if you keep the window slightly open for fresh air like I do (i stayed on the 8th floor). Closing the window helps a lot but makes the room somewhat stuffy and there're no 2 ways about it. I find ear plugs help a lot with the noise problem. I faced issues with choked toilet bowl twice during my 6 day stay. First time I got the plumber up (who came promptly) to solve the problem. Two days later it choked again and I decided to use a plunger in the bathroom to get the choke cleared. I figured the bowl doesn't handle too much gunk well so bear that in mind. Finally, the rooms don't come with refrigerators so don't buy stuff for breakfast that you can't store w/o a fridge, like milk or fruit). Otherwise, this is a highly recommended place.

We stayed here because of price and location and were not disappointed. We traveled from the airport by BART and the hotel was a short walk from Powell street as described by another reviewer. Although the room was smaller than some hotels it was spotlessly clean and it was nice to have somewhere with a bit of character (roll top bath, nice windows). The bed was comfortable and the linen smelt nice and clean. There was a ceiling fan and the windows opened. We were at the back of the hotel on the 9th floor so didn't notice any street noise. The hotel was a great base for exploring and there are plenty of places to get breakfast near by. The staff were helpful when asked and a front door key was provided as the hotel locks the doors at 9pm. If i was returning to San Francisco i would almost certainly stay here again due to price and cleanliness.

We booked this hotel based on reviews by other members. Don't expect spacious rooms or more than 1 elevator in this old hotel. However, the location is ideal if you want to be near Union Square, Chinatown or the financial district. A Starbucks 2 doors down, bakery around the corner, and all-day in/out parking 1-1/2 blocks on Sutter for $34/day. The price is reasonable and rooms are clean. For a family of 4, the 2 double-bed room was small. Would recommend making use of the closet for suitcases and dresser to store your clothing. No air conditioning but opening the slider window at night will keep your room cool. The big plus is free Wi-Fi in every room. Front door to hotel is secured at night. Guests have key to access entry at night. Wish they provided a small frig in the room.

Room Tip: Rooms away from Grant Avenue are quieter. Lower floors can easily be accessed by inside stairwell i...

The Baldwin has very clean rooms and bath. No Microwave or refrigerator but you are close to many restarants. Window opens for fresh air. Friendly staff. Older hotel but well kept. Close to trolley and BART for easy travel to SF Airport. BART was about $9.00 one-way from SFA and only 25 minutes. Get off at Powell St. Exit and walk one block to Grant steet.....Then 3 blocks to Baldwin. My stay was about $90.00 a night. Stayed three nights. Would stay there again!

Room Tip: Close To BART Powell Station and Trolley
