“Great funky little hotel in a wonderful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2009

We stayed here for 3 nights in early August, 2009. This was a great place. It's an old motor lodge so cars are parked directly below the rooms. It's fairly no frills but the price reflects that. Prices are reasonable. The staff was always courteous and friendly. There's a cute little pool in the center with a few big palm trees nearby with hammocks attached. A little oasis from the city. The pool was cold mind you, but young kids never seem to mind.

The rooms were small, but very cozy. They are painted in bright, cheery colors. We had a one bedroom that barely fit the bed while our kids slept in the living room. The bed was comfortable, not too soft, not too hard. That was a welcome relief.

Breakfast was included. It was continental and consisted of bagels, coffee, pastries, and oatmeal. In the afternoon, they served warm cookies and milk for the kids (between 3-5pm).

Location was great, just 1 block from Lombard Street in the Marina/Cow Hollow district. We often kept the car parked at the hotel and used the buses to get around which were pretty convenient. There are many restaurants right near the hotel (Thai, Vegetarian, Diner, etc.).

Overall, I would recommend this hotel. It's a funky little place that's comfortable, family friendly with a great location and a moderate price. What more can you ask?

I booked the Hotel Del Sol largely because it was in a decent location, but more for the fact that it had free parking and breakfast. If you are searching for hotels with free parking in San Francisco, you will find there are very few. There are lots of nice hotels i looked at booking, but they were charging $25 and up per night for parking. This hotel was within about 10-15 minutes walk to Fishermans Wharf (I have read people saying 5 mins, but either they were running or found a much better route than us!) and was a really nice hotel. I was expecting it to be pretty basic, but the room was really nice with a super comfy bed. The pool was quite small but was nice and warm and I had a good cool down in it after a long day walking around San Francisco. The breakfast was pretty good and was constantly being replenished. The neighbourhood felt really safe, and the noise (which I had read reviews about being bad) was not a problem. The stairs WERE really noisy for some reason and you could hear people walking up and down them, but that is only for a few seconds so wasnt a problem. There was some street noise on the Saturday night of our stay, but that is to be expected in a busy city on a Saturday night. We went to Alcatraz and did a Segway Tour, both of which are highly recommended. We also ate at Boudins on Fishermans Wharf (where you can watch them making the bread) and this was also very good. This hotel was a really good base for our stay and I would recommend it to anyone.

Booked Hotel Del Sol for a family vacation based on mostly positive reviews on Tripadvisor.com. We spent 8 nights at the hotel and were very happy with our stay. The room was clean and maid service prompt every day. The Marina District location was excellent - walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf with a ton of restaurants within a 5 minute walk. The staff was attentive, friendly and helpful. I had read mixed reviews on the breakfast and the pool size but breakfast was fine - coffee, OJ, bagels, pastries and the pool was big and deep enough for us to swim lengths and it was salt water - no chlorine! Add in the complimentary parking, movies for our kids and hi speed internet and we found this hotel a great overall value - would absolutely stay there again.

If your looking for a 5 star hotel, being pampered, soundproof walls and catered breakfast don't bother. Quite simply PRO"S: Clean rooms, fresh linens, hot shower, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel dispenser in shower, heated pool, on site parking, close to food, stores, gas, main route and great location. Friendly and helpful staff, safe provided in room Daily newpaper in lobby CONS: parking can be tricky in afternoon, contential breakfast weak ( oatmeal, pastry, bagel, toast, coffee, juice, some fresh fruit would of been great) no refridgerator in room, Overall good experience I would stay again

Del Sol was a great little hotel. It was small, smart, convenient and friendly. It was spotless when we checked in and cleaned daily. It's basic but comfortable. We loved the colourful decor and the garden area. There's so much to do in San Fransisco why would you go to an expensive hotel and waste money when Del Sol has all you need. The reception staff was so friendly and helpful too.

You'll never be able to stay in a regular chain hotel after one visit here! You can't help but to feel happy when you wake up to the vivid colors found everywhere - the orange trees, the rooms and hamocks strung between palm trees. It is located in a family friendly neighborhood where people live, versus a tourist hub like Fisherman's Wharf. Only a two block walk from the bus, a fun playground and four blocks from a grocery store. Only con is the noise with the Melrose Place -style courtyard where the comings and goings of guests are amplified. But it's a small downside for such a great place.

This hotel is something really special: so colourful, with palms and an inviting pool in the courtyard. The hotel is located near Lombard street, but not too close to get its noise. The breakfast is served in the courtyard (one critical point: there are not enough chairs, when the hotel is full). The location is perfect to discover every sight in San Francisco.
