“Great Staff, Great room, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2010

I recently stayed at the Chancellor Hotel and it was great. I booked my room with an online service. When my sister and I checked in, they had us in a room with one queen bed. I then asked if there was a room with two twin beds. They told us they didn't, but immediately offered a suite at no extra charge to give us more room. We thought with the extra room we could get a rollaway bed then. When we saw the suite, it was more than perfect. Each room had its own bathroom, television only one had a queen bed and one had a couch and table. They even had their own doors to the hall The rollaway bed fit perfectly in the couch/table room after reaaranging the furniture. It even had a fridge. In the end we wound up with two little mini rooms. No sharing of bathrooms - bonus.

The room was clean, quiet, and stylishly decorated. The bathroom amenities were even nice - loved the body lotion in particular. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The location was perfect for us shoppers as all the stores were withing walking distance. Even the cable car was only a five-minute walk away where it turns around.

I would highly recommend this hotel and I actually booked it because others rated this hotel so highly on this site. I was grateful for the reviews. That's why I felt compelled to write a review on the hotel myself.

Being at Union Square, enjoy the sounds of the Trolley cars. the night music of the cars add to the whole eperience. Being so close to the trolley line is indeed a plus. We loved our time. We high, high highly recommend this hotel.

Chancellor is a great hotel! We stayed here for 2 nights, and overall the location was centralized and safe for us, just two young ladies traveling alone. It's our first time visiting SF, and getting from the airport to hotel was a breeze with the Lorries shuttle service, as recommended on their hotel website.

Room was great, and the bathroom is perfect! Water pressure and temperature was just right, and you know you can't get water pressure right at MOST hotels. Bathroom was small, but the space is wisely used, and the lighting is great for make-up. There is even a rubber duckie welcoming you in the bathroom.

Beds are comfy, and you can even choose your own pillow from their 'pillow menu' if those are not up to your standard. There is a closet big enough to haul 2 luggages in there, with room left for walking space or even setting up an ironing board.

Location wise : just 1/2 block away from Union Square, and 2 blocks down from Market Street. This makes the location very centralized yet not overly crowded and noisy. Borders is just next door, and 24-hour pharmacy Wal-greens is just round the corner. If you are taking the BART, it will be a slight up-slope walk from the station to the hotel, but a rather leisure one. Cable car stop is just right in front of the hotel, and there is 2 Starbucks nearby! Getting to everywhere was a breeze!

The staff are friendly and helpful, and the lady running the gift kiosk (you can get Muni passes from her as well) was also very kind and patient. Would recommend this hotel to anybody visiting SF for the first time.

My stay at The Chancellor was outstanding! It is a fantastic old historic building that holds it's charm and character well. Yes, the rooms are smaller. Yes, the floors creaky in spots. Yes, you can occasionally here the folks in the next room. IT IS AN OLD BUILDING! If you want new, shiny, fancy perfection, don't stay here. If you love old buildings and history, this is the perfect spot! The staff was excellent. My bed was excellent, as was the huge tub! I WILL stay here again when in San Francisco! Thank you Chancellor, you made my stay comfortable and complete!

We finished our road trip here and having travelled over 3000 miles this was far and away the best hotel we stayed in. Firstly it transpired that we were going to arrive a day early. We thought about finding somewhere else to shack up for the night before deciding to try our luck at The Chancellor. Not only did they squeeze us in but when we arrived they had managed to juggle things so that we had the same room for our entire stay. We even got a small discount! As we had requested upon booking we were put on a high floor (luckily the top) and had cracking views over Union Square. The room itself although slightly on the small size fitted us and all our rubbish in comfortably. Nice tall ceilings and quality furishings welcomed these weary travellers. Thoughtful little touches such as the personalised rubber duck and the jar of sweets made you feel that the staff genuinely were pushing the boat out to make your stay special. Another plus that we hadn't yet encountered on our trip was the kiosk in the reception where we were able to seek help on all things SF and touristy! All the staff were great and just themselves, rather than being just faceless uniforms. Even the tram goes right past the front door! A faultless stay. If we are fortunate enough to be able to return to SF one day then I hope The Chancellor have a spare room.

We love staying at the Chancellor from the friendly staff to the great location it always makes for a perfect get-a-way. It's convenient to get to by car and the garage is close by. You can walk most anywhere in the city within a 3 mile radius. There are tons of great places to eat nearby and if you can't sleep you can always go next door to Borders and get a book. Room 206 is perfect in the back with your windows open and you can walk down to the lobby, plus the oversized tubs and water pressure are amazing!

The hotel is a good value for the money. The staff was super helpful and friendly. The location is Union Square which makes it very easy to hop on a cable car. The rooms are very clean, but small. The only thing I was unhappy with was the restaurant... the service was terrible each morning. Waiters walk right past you without looking to see if you need anything. Food was decent.
