“Superb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2010

This was perhaps the most impressive low cost hotel I have ever stayed in because I have never felt so welcome. They do so much to make you feel like a valued guest. Really unusual in this day & age. Lots of lovely little gestures and signs in the room to top notch reception and free tea & coffee making facilities (and cookies) during the day at the lobby bar. Fantastic location right outside a cable car stop. This approach to running a business is what some people call old fashioned but I believe is basic good business sense. Word of mouth means so much more than paid advertising and I am telling you.... if you are looking for a low cost hotel right in Chancellor Square then this is it!!! My congratulations and deepest thanks to Staff & Managment.

San Francisco was the third stop on our four week holiday to the States. We decided on the Chancellor hotel based heavily on T.A. reviews. I booked through expedia.com.au . Our group consisted of six young adults.

The accomodation more than met our requirements. Each room had enough wardrobe space for our belongings and the bathroom facilities were adequate. The bedding and pillows were comfortable (you can order special pillows at no extra cost, check the hotel guide in your room).

The bar on the ground floor is very convenient if you want to throw back a couple of martinees before heading out for the evening, even better during happy hour!

The guest lift is small, just like you would find in some traditional hotels in Europe. If you plan to stay at the Chancellor and you have many large bags you might need to make a few extra trips up the lift or if you're lazy just ask the front desk fro help.

Each room had ceiling fans but no air con. We were there towards the end of the North American winter so air con was not required, but this could prove to be an issue in the hot summer months.

You can open the window which I think is a real plus, not just for the fresh cool air but I thougth it was nice to stick my head out the window for a look or have the window open to listen to the hustle and bustle of Union Square.

Location is great, if you havent' been to San Fran before do your research and look up Union Square, you'll find that it's a real central location, great for shopping!

As suggested by the Hotel we booked GO Laurie's Shuttle for transport to and from the airport. It worked out around AU$90 in total for the private van each way. Susan at the tour desk in the lobby was fantastic, nothing was an issue for her, she booked everything for us with pleasure!

The Chancellor Hotel ended up being a memorable part of our San Francisco experience. We were more than happy with our stay. All the employees were very friendly and accomodating at all times and the hotel itself has real character.

Dont' expect a big modern fancy lobby or hi-tech lighting and electronic mod con devices in your room.. if you want that then go somewhere else. Stay at the Chancellor if you want great customer service, simple, basic but comfrortable acccomodation that represents great value for money.

Overall a great experience. I would recommend it to family and friends.

Comfortable room to come back to each day .... small by US standards, but comparable to European hotels. Though small, very adequate -- the choice of pillows is an added plus!! Great bed - and isn't that what it's all about anyway?? .... Centrally located - walk to Chinatown and shops - across from Union - cable car pick up in front. ... Next door to Sears restaurant, but quite frankly for breakfast, the hotel restaurant is just as good w/o the waiting in line and higher prices. ..... Parking is a challenge in this city (and quite expensive), but the hotel has reduced "off-site parking" about a block away - if part of your accomodation package, will reduce your expenses for parking (with in/out privileges). There is temporary parking in front of the hotel for loading/unloading. .. Wireless internet in the room wasn't too good however - perhaps a problem that needs correction. ..... Would come back again.

Thank you for the very nice review.

I am sorry about the wireless internet. We spent a lot of money on an upgrade to double the speed and bandwith, however we had some issues that took some time to resolve.

It is working very well now and will from now on...I guarantee it!

Thanks again!

I have stayed at the Chancellor each time I visit SanFran (about twice a year for the past 4 or 5 years). I just returned from yet another stay. It is, as the other reviews say, a wonderful hotel. Yes, the rooms are very clean, the coffee in the AM is great, and I like the apples, but what makes it wonderful for me? Note to the manager: the staff at the front desk know the importance of being pleasant. No hassles. No "I'll see what I can do later." No phony attitude. Just a pleasant group of folks. I arrived early from a flight out of New York and I much appreciated there was no hassle: "Here's your room." And that was it. No "Sorry, you are early, come back at 3pm." Great. Also to management: here is my criticism - I hated those peppermint cookies; PLEASE bring back good old-fashioned chocolate chip. One last point to newcomers: Eat at Lori's Diner up the block. Wonderful food. Not fancy, but delicious.

Thank you for the "Note to manager." I am glad you like the way our desk staff serves. That is a great compliment. They will appreciate your comments as well.

I agree about the cookies. I will let the right people know we prefer good ol' fashioned chocolate chip cookies.

Thank you for being our guest!

We stayed here on our honeymoon this hotel met and exceeded our expectations.Awaiting in our room when we arrived was a wedding gift a bottle of champagne and a photo frame and lollies. The hotels location is perfect. It's right in the heart of the city opposite union square.Walking distance to Chinatown. You cannot beat this location. The rooms were very clean and tidy. The reception staff were always very polite and helpful. The housekeeping staff were great the room was always made up when you arrived back after a long day.The pillow menu was fantastic you could just call up and order a pillow to try. We liked the memory foam ones so much we went out and bought some. There is a computer by the reception to use for free or if you have a lap top there is free internet in the rooms, which is awesome. This hotel is value for money.

We stayed for 4 nights and really loved the hotel. It's location is right on a stop on the Powell Street cable cars and only 4 blocks from the BART station. We took the BART train from the airport and its about a 5 minute walk from the station. The rooms are small but well appointed, the beds are comfortable and you can't beat the 12 item pillow menu. It was my birthday while in SF and the hotel had a bottle of wine, chocolates and a gift for me in the room when we arrived. That was a really nice touch! We never ate at the restaurant in the hotel due to the early times of the tours we did but it looked good and people were always in there.

I recommend buying a MUNI pass if you plan on riding the cable cars and/or busses around SF. One ride on the cable car is $5 and they sell MUNI passes at the travel desk in the lobby at a rate of $20 for 3 days or $26 for 7 days. Our paid for themselves in a little over a day.

I would highly recommend the Chancellor Hotel for any stay in SF. We're planning on staying there any time we visit SF.

We started our USA trip at this hotel and were pleasantly surprised.. We had considered staying in Fisherman's wharf but this for us for a much better location. The rooms were lovely and the added bonus of being able to do a pillow order was great. Added extras that we really appreciated were the cookies, apples and coffee always availabe in the lobby. Across the road from Union Square and a short walk to Bart/Muni and also on tram line. In summary 5/5.
