“An affordable, charming place at Union Square”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013 via mobile

Sure, the rooms are tiny and outdated. But this place boasts charm, location and affordability. And location. We stayed on a lower floor, so had no view whatsoever. Nice touches included the complimentary cookies and drink specials. Staff was helpful and polite. Tip: skip breakfast here and go next door to Sears...not that the breakfast is bad, it's just unfairly good competition next door.

I was with you all the way until the last line. Our breakfast and far superior and the only competition they offer is the name recognition.

Come back and try them both and if you don't think our breakfast is better, we'll refund ours and pay for the one next door.

Thanks!

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in June. We found the hotel to be in a top location right on Union Square. The rooms are slightly dated but clean and well equipped. The hotel laid on some sparkling wine for our honeymoon, and the free cookies/tea downstairs in the lobby are a nice touch. Luques restaurant in the hotel is good for breakfast.
Overall good value, perfect for a short break.

Room Tip: Get high room for views and to help with traffic noise

I have been staying at the Chancellor since I was a child...The rooms are small but comfortable...The location is great and the staff is very helpful...If you want quality, affordability, location, then this is the place...

Room Tip: Rooms up high are quieter...

I am pretty sure that chancellor is a right choice in San Francisco. The hotel location is perfect to know the main tourist points, very easy access to cable car and regular buses!

The Hotel is very nice and can offer a very nice stay to your guests!
I did not have the opportunitty to try the hotel food but your employees and front desk agents are always ready to serve you!

Stayed here in June 2013 for our anniversary. More personable and unique than a corporate chain, yet very clean and well provisioned. We were glad to accept the small eccentricities of the place as part of the character you encounter when you stay somewhere unique and interesting where the staff are allowed to do small favors (like surprise your wife with a bottle of wine and a card and let you checkin 6 hours early!) and seem to enjoy their work. We got a pretty good deal and the location was great.

Stayed here a almost a year ago with my family, just getting to writing a review now. I liked the hotel a lot- great location off Union Square, close to public transportation. Staff was very friendly and accommodating, and the rooms were in great condition/clean. Our rooms were a little small, but it's to be expected in a city and how often will you be in the room anyway? I would stay again!

The Chancellor Hotel was our first stop on our honeymoon, which included a number of places in California. We stayed for 4 nights, and it was absolutely great. We were on the 14th floor, and the room was small but had every amenity we needed. The photos on TripAdvisor are accurate, and we thought the complimentary wine was a lovely touch. It was great to have a fridge in the room and the closet was very useful for our suitcases which would have taken up a lot of room otherwise!
