“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in August and had a wonderful experience. The hotel has a great location and we were able to walk almost everywhere we needed to go. The beds were very comfortable and the cucumber water, apples, and cookies in the lobby were a nice touch. We would definitely stay here again if we ever visit SF again.

We stayed here at the end of December 2012 for 3 nights. It was our first visit to San Francisco and I don't think we could have chosen a more convenient place to stay. It is off Union Square, so the chances of getting lost and not being able to find our way back were minimal.

We came straight from the airport, using the BART train. Once out of the station, we just followed the instructions on the hotel website and walked up the hill for a few blocks. It was so simple. Our check-in was fast and we enjoyed the chilled water and cookies at the reception.

Our room was a decent size and we were very happy with it. The bed and pillows were comfortable, the bathroom was clean, there was a small fridge and even a jar of candy/sweets. This was a small touch that impressed us. There were no tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but we went down to the reception area where there was a range of teas and coffee. We had a room on the 6th floor at the back of the hotel and we slept like babies. Our understanding was that you either have a quiet room (back of hotel) or a room with a view (front of hotel). Sleep was more important to us!

The best thing was the location. It is so convenient. Even if you don't wish to eat in the hotel restaurant, walk outside and there is a multitude of options. It is an old hotel, but you need to understand that before you book it. For us, it was clean and comfortable, and provided everything we needed. We would not hesitate to stay there again.

Room Tip: Decide if you want a quiet room or a room with a view.

We booked this hotel after reading other reviews, and was not dissapointed, this hotel was perfect! We travelled over from Oakland via BART which the station is just a short walk down the road. Check in was great, staff was excellent other than the clerk who made fun of me for wearing an Oakland Raiders jersey haha was all good!!! The hotel lobby is nice, the entire hotel we noticed was very clean, well kept up, our room was nice, we only needed it for one night and basically to sleep so didn't spend alot of time in our room but was excellent. Starbucks just on the corner, you're right across from Union Square, we had breakfast in the hotel restaurant and service and food was great, and not too expensive, was very reasonable. Was a in-room safe as well as a complimentary umbrella to borrow, lol. I would for sure stay at this hotel again on our next visit. And for food or dining there is lots in the area walking distance. Cable Cars right our front as well.

I booked the Chancellor based on previous Tripadvisor reviews and was not disappointed. They have a great location about 1/2 block off of Union Square. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The lobby was quaint and my room, while small, was very clean and adequate for my needs. If I was going to be spending a fair amount of time in my room I would inquire about a bigger room. My room rate was about 1/3 less than other similar hotels in the same area and size. I would definitely stay there again.

Finally a place that understands that very small "investments" can make a huge difference, such as simple coffee, tea, cookies and fruit available at the reception, comfortable pillows, internet that works in ALL floors (not only in the reception), etc. These add so much value to the hotel experience.

The room was just a little noisy, but I don't think it can get any better around Union Sq..

The staff and service are truly remarkable. Easily the best i've ever had. They are the real reason to stay here, in addtion to the location, because the rooms a little on the small side and you get a bit of noise between rooms and also from the old building. It really shouldn't deter you though as, again, this is really the best service i've received in SF from hoteliers. Check-in, concierge, room amenities and thoughfulness, are all as good as it gets. If you are a party of two or less, you really shouldn't stay anywhere else in union square.

Room Tip: we stayed "high and quiet" and will always ask for this in the future- 15 floors.
