“Nice hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

Nice, historic hotel just north of Union Square. Convenient to public transportation, shopping and restaurants. Rooms are small but decor is nice and clean. Walls are a little thin - could hear the baby next door.

“Great stay in San Fran!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

We spent two nights in August at the Chancellor hotel and really enjoyed our stay. We were allowed to check in at 11am which after a long flight from Chicago and a quick turnaround to get to AT&T park, it was a huge help! Our room was on the 3rd floor in a corner - not the best view (looking out to the alley) but we were in the room for such a limited amount of time we didn't notice. The room was on the small side but the bed was comfy, the TV was nice and I loved the pillow menu! The location had to be the best part of the hotel, it was in union square - walking distance to Chinatown, AT&T park and near bars/restaurants. The price was reasonable given how expensive the town is to stay in and if we head back to the Bay Area, we would def. stay there again!

PS: if you are looking for a great cocktail bar, hit up Tope!

“Everything perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

This hotel was amazing in every way possible. Free wifi, free coffee and homemade biscuits!! The staff were really friendly and helpful. Cable car was literally out the front door so getting to fishermans wharf was easy. Best location for shopping! Room was spotless and if you have a view of union square it's so nice at night!

“Excellent for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

This is a gem of a hotel right on Union Square. We have been staying there for more than a decade. The staff is very friendly and helpful. On our last visit, we registered a complaint with the front desk regarding our shower head. It was putting out only a dribble of water. The problem was fixed immediately. We look forward to eating breakfast in the hotel's cozy dining room. The staff there is welcoming and very efficient. My husband particularly enjoys the Breakfast Skillet--eggs, fabulous hash brown potatoes, chicken sausage and other vegetables served in a piping hot cast iron skillet. The hotel also offers free coffee and tea in the morning in the lobby. We always request a room in the rear, because of the clamor of Powell Street, but have in the past had to stay on the front a few times. The hotel is well soundproofed, so it wasn't really a problem. The rooms are clean, and usually have two arm chairs, a side table, a desk and a clothes chest, plus a closet. The carpet is clean, but a little tired. The hotel has in the past few years updated its bed linens so now they are crisp white shams and a fluffy duvet. The bathrooms are small--definitely one person at a time, but well appointed with shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shower caps, hair dryer and good soap. The bathtub/shower is an older version that is very deep, so you need to be careful getting in and out. There is a grab bar on the wall to hold on to. And possibly the most wonderful thing about The Chancellor are the free, home made cookies available in the lobby all day long. I noticed on this trip they now offer apples, too, but they can't compare to the oatmeal raisin cookies.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back.

“Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

My husband and I stayed three nights at this hotel while he was in town for a conference and would definitely stay here again. It is on the cable line, has easy access to trolley and only four easy blocks (about) to BART. Used BART to and from the airport with no problem and much less expensive than alternatives. Rooms were small but very clean, well furnished, updated and had great bedding. The staff was always friendly. The lobby was comfortable and always had good cookies, water, coffee and apples. There is a small bar off the lobby and a cafe restaurant attached. It is noisy because it is on the cable line and in a very populated location but certainly would not detour us from staying next time we are in San Francisco.
