“Great stay in San Fran!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

We spent two nights in August at the Chancellor hotel and really enjoyed our stay. We were allowed to check in at 11am which after a long flight from Chicago and a quick turnaround to get to AT&T park, it was a huge help! Our room was on the 3rd floor in a corner - not the best view (looking out to the alley) but we were in the room for such a limited amount of time we didn't notice. The room was on the small side but the bed was comfy, the TV was nice and I loved the pillow menu! The location had to be the best part of the hotel, it was in union square - walking distance to Chinatown, AT&T park and near bars/restaurants. The price was reasonable given how expensive the town is to stay in and if we head back to the Bay Area, we would def. stay there again!

PS: if you are looking for a great cocktail bar, hit up Tope!

This hotel was amazing in every way possible. Free wifi, free coffee and homemade biscuits!! The staff were really friendly and helpful. Cable car was literally out the front door so getting to fishermans wharf was easy. Best location for shopping! Room was spotless and if you have a view of union square it's so nice at night!

This is a gem of a hotel right on Union Square. We have been staying there for more than a decade. The staff is very friendly and helpful. On our last visit, we registered a complaint with the front desk regarding our shower head. It was putting out only a dribble of water. The problem was fixed immediately. We look forward to eating breakfast in the hotel's cozy dining room. The staff there is welcoming and very efficient. My husband particularly enjoys the Breakfast Skillet--eggs, fabulous hash brown potatoes, chicken sausage and other vegetables served in a piping hot cast iron skillet. The hotel also offers free coffee and tea in the morning in the lobby. We always request a room in the rear, because of the clamor of Powell Street, but have in the past had to stay on the front a few times. The hotel is well soundproofed, so it wasn't really a problem. The rooms are clean, and usually have two arm chairs, a side table, a desk and a clothes chest, plus a closet. The carpet is clean, but a little tired. The hotel has in the past few years updated its bed linens so now they are crisp white shams and a fluffy duvet. The bathrooms are small--definitely one person at a time, but well appointed with shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shower caps, hair dryer and good soap. The bathtub/shower is an older version that is very deep, so you need to be careful getting in and out. There is a grab bar on the wall to hold on to. And possibly the most wonderful thing about The Chancellor are the free, home made cookies available in the lobby all day long. I noticed on this trip they now offer apples, too, but they can't compare to the oatmeal raisin cookies.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back.

My husband and I stayed three nights at this hotel while he was in town for a conference and would definitely stay here again. It is on the cable line, has easy access to trolley and only four easy blocks (about) to BART. Used BART to and from the airport with no problem and much less expensive than alternatives. Rooms were small but very clean, well furnished, updated and had great bedding. The staff was always friendly. The lobby was comfortable and always had good cookies, water, coffee and apples. There is a small bar off the lobby and a cafe restaurant attached. It is noisy because it is on the cable line and in a very populated location but certainly would not detour us from staying next time we are in San Francisco.

I usually request a back room, but they were sold out, so my mother and I settled for the seventh floor front rooms that they had set aside for us. The soundproofing is quite good, really. You hear trolleys and saxophones outside, but they also quiet down as the night moves on. I still would request a back room, but it's the Chancellor: great location, excellent service, friendly staff. So nice to not stay in a big chain hotel and also I have to admit that I love those deep long tubs! WiFi was worthless on my iPad but my iPhone with Verizon wireless worked well. Great breakfast. Just as good as Sears next door, which I also love.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back. But unless you are a severe insomniac, don't get too upset if all th...

The hotel is in a great location with easy access to the prime shops. The cable car runs past the front of the hotel but you might need to walk to the bottom to get a ride. It is really easy to get to Fisherman's Wharf on the cable car. You can get the historic tram to the Alcatraz ferry. The rooms are small but nicely furnished. The bathrooms need an update. The hotel kindly provided us with a complimentary bottle of wine to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. There is a Walgreen's next door for all you need. There is great service from the airport on the BART with only a 5-minute walk to the hotel. Transport in the city is really efficient. Get a multi-day all transport pass and you will save money particularly if you use the cable car a number of times.

Room Tip: Room higher at the back for lower noise. Room at the front for a better view but these maybe the lar...

This is a brilliantly located hotel in San Francisco. Its expensive, but it seems that everywhere is and its proximity to Union Square is a huge plus. The reception staff are helpful, rooms are spotless quiet and comfortable. If u want 4 star luxury its not for you, but i highly recommend it as a clean comfortable base in an unbeatable location!
