“Great location, impeccable service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

This is an old building, and it shows. So an update, particularly rooms could do with a personality injection. But there is something individual and interesting about this in a mass of corporate non-individual hotels. Internet access: should be free, a charge of $11 is not on these days, especially when compared with Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express where internet access is free.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

This hotel on Nob Hill is a pleasant place to stay. From the moment you arrive the historical grandeur is displayed. Beautiful views of the city's skyline or ocean await you from the rooms or Top of the Mark restaurant on penthouse floor. This is reportedly the location where many sailors kissed their loved ones goodbye before leaving port. While the rooms and bathrooms are very small they are well appointed and comfortable. Improvements could be made with cleaning shower tiles and providing higher quality towels. A 2am phone call to front desk for disrupting neighbors was met with security guards but not resolved as loud talking and laughter from next door lasted until 7:30 am. Upon checkout- a general manager provided apologies and his card for additional night stay on next visit. The food was above average and fresh. Courteous and well trained staff did not disappoint.

I stayed there for the first time this year on a three day trip to San Fran. The location was perfect. Loved the view from my room. We had a concierge meal service in the mornings and a happy hour when we returned from the city in the afternoon before going out each night. The location was close to china town and right on the cable car line. We did a dinner for eighteen at the Tonga room next door and it was spectacular.

The hotel is absolutely grand and the reception pleasant at arrival. The room was also elegant with an extremely comfortable bed and overall very spacious. I was in the fifth floor and still had a good view of the bay.

That is as far as my pluses go, however. Unfortunately the old charm is not sufficient to make up for the needs. The Top of the Marks is the only food service in the hotel, but it is expensive (the views are fantastic). The room service, although convenient, was expensive and a disaster! I ordered breakfast: eggs Benedict with west coast crab cakes, served with avocado and a dill Hollandaise sauce. What else could I want my very first day and right before a long working day!

The food I received had no crab cakes, no avocado, no dill or hardly any sauce, and Canadian bacon that tasted sour. I was furious! I called up the restaurant, but too late to get anything else for that morning.

At check out time, the receptionist reacted incredulous and said I needed to talk to their restaurant manager before the charge could be removed from my bill. Unbelievable! I was in a break from a meeting and I told him that I couldn't wait there for the manager to come at this moment. But why should I be talking to anyone else anyways? I did return, about 1 hour later, and they had removed the charge, but the entire event was less than pleasant.

The location of the hotel is not the best from the point of view of having other quick bites. So, to make a long story short, that day I worked hungry as I could hardly eat any of what was served to me, except for a bit of egg.

I don't think this is a 4 or 5 stars hotel. There is really very little offered to pamper the guests, and describing their foods correctly in the room service menu is just basic!!!

okay so I've stayed in SF so many times I can't count. The Mark Hopkins is in a great location and the view from the Top of the Mark is spectacular. The rooms are standard and nothing special. So if you get a rate around $150 then it's worth it. Any more then start the bidding on Priceline. Still it has a lot of history and there is plenty to do on top of this hill. Grace Cathedral, park, stop at the Fairmont for a drink, local restaurants, etc.

Room Tip: On California street facing the Fairmont. IT's quiet.

Ive stayed at the Mark Hopkins for business and pleasure. I've put up family there. People are visiting and want a nice place to stay -- the Mark Hopkins is a great spot. Out of the rooms I've stayed in, the corner city-view rooms are the best. You are scary high up on the hill, but if its a clear day you get a spectacular view of the city with great southern exposure. This hotel has some charm in terms of architecture which makes the bathrooms and rooms more interesting than some of the more recently renovated hotels in the area. Included in most bookings are two cocktails at the famous "Top of the Mark" bar and restaurant. The food and service ain't special here at all, but the drinks, view and history make it an amazing spot.

Room Tip: Get a city-facing room on a corner. South-Facing and on the hill these rooms have great views of the...

The views from the room were incredible. I am sure that it is partly due to exceptional weather and very little fog. The room was quiet and housekeeping was exceptional. The service staff was overall outstanding except for one bellhop who watched me navigate 3 bags through the lobby and would not open the door for me. He actually stood at the door and would not open it. I guess by managing my own bags he thought it cost him a tip. Sadly this one employee tainted the entire experience.

The hotel is located at the top of Nob Hill. You can easily walk to Chinatown though coming back up the hill can be a cardio experience, but cabs are easy to get. The cable car line cross about a block away and is convenient.

Parking fees were high ($52+tax per night) but the car came very quickly when needed.

Room Tip: Rooms near the corners are quieter and if you can get a bay view it is excellent.
