“Traditional Elegance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

This hotel has lovely common areas with opulent chandeliers and crown moldings indicative of days gone by. The rooms are simple and traditional in decor and a bit on the small size with very comfortable beds. Unfortunately our room faced an interior well, I'll call it a court yard for lack of a better term but ugly shaft of surrounding walls seems more apropos. I think a room facing market street with a city view would have been nice yet possibly noisy. One nice thing about our room was that the single hung window opened all the way up so we had nice fresh air all night with little noise. We were however, awoken by the vibrating pipes in the wall every time someone in the surrounding rooms turned on the shower. Like sleeping with the Trojan marching band. We are energetic city walkers and found this location to be extremely convenient to everything the city had to offer including Union square China town, North beach and our favorite Saturday farmers market at the Embarcadero. We even walked to Fisherman's Wharf but I'm not sure everyone would be up to that. It was a very n ice trip.

Room Tip: The sea bass with lemon caper butter sauce at near by Sears Fine food is excellent!

Thank you for sharing your San Francisco adventure with us at the Palace Hotel. We appreciate your feedback regarding the beauty of the hotel and the well-appointed guestrooms. Earlier this year we replaced all the mattresses in the guestrooms; we now feature the newest Luxury Collection Beautyrest Pillow Top Mattress. The Palace Hotel was built in 1909 and although we do allow guests to upgrade to a Market Street view room, we have interior facing rooms since that was the desire of the early 1900’s. In regards to the pipe noise, PG&E has been doing construction on the pipes in the area, making our pipes rattle at different time periods. We are looking into how to fix this issue until they are finished with neighboring construction, but do apologize for the inconvenience it caused you. Thank you again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

“Name is a total misnomer”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

Literally just checked into this hotel having booked with American Express Platinum Travel through their "Fine Resorts" program. There is nothing "palatial" about this hotel. Small windows, dingy carpet, dirty shades, small bathrooms. Very average hotel that deserves at best a 3-start rating. All facade with no substance. Location in downtown SF is good but otherwise a truly average hotel. Already called AmEx to log a similar complaint.

Thank you for taking the time to connect with us and provide your valuable feedback. We are disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy your overall stay at the Palace Hotel. This hotel was originally rebuilt in 1909 and although we have made efforts to maximize space, there is unfortunately not much we can do structurally to the hotel layout. All hotels are built and redesigned in the moment and although this is a historic hotel, we will continue to enhance it through continual renovations. We will use comments like yours to help show ownership areas in which renovation monies are needed. Thank you again for the feedback and we hope you will continue to monitor the changes of the historic Palace Hotel.

“Majestic hotel in a fantastic location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013 via mobile

We stayed in a two bedded double room with our children, aged 14 and 11 for three nights in February. The hotel was palatial in decoration, complete with footmen, grand pianos and chandeliers. Truly majestic. The rooms were very comfortable, the shower superb and we had a great view of the city. Only a couple of niggly points. We would have loved to had tea/coffee making facilities in the room; room service and food in general was incredibly expensive. Although there is complimentary coffee etc from 6 am when your on British time and waking at odd hours it would have been nice to make a drink in the room. Not a lot to ask considering the price. And the walls are quite thin, you can hear everything! But on the whole fab place, pool lovely and would stay again - taking a kettle with me!!

“Not a true luxury hotel experience, just good branding”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013 via mobile

My first time staying at a Palace hotel, here for an investment bank conference along with hundreds of others. While the common areas and restaurants are ornate and what you'd expect from a luxury hotel, that experience ends once you get on an elevator. The corridors and the rooms are incredibly tired looking and in desperate need of renovation. It's downright shocking. Chipped paint, rust, dirt and thin walls. A hair on my pillow, a hair in the shower, clearly no one bothered to look the room over properly (although they did allow me to check in at noon which was very convenient). Even the menu for room service was just stapled papers. There is no hotel review that could possibly consider the rooms as even close to being "luxury". I actually find this to be deceptive branding, referring to the Palace as part of the "luxury collection" at Starwood. The staff has been great, and the overall hotel is certainly a classic looking property, but any discerning traveler will be sorely disappointed by the rooms, if they are similar to the one I was in. I am truly shocked given the price tag here.

Thank you for taking the time to connect with us and provide valuable feedback. We are very appreciative of guest feedback as it is the direct source to information which will help us improve our product and our service. Thank you for your comments regarding the beauty of the public space of the hotel; being such a historic property we strive to provide our guests with timeless beauty while also offering modern conveniences. We are dismayed to hear that your room was not up to the standards of cleanliness that we promise to our guests and I have shared your insights with our Director of Housekeeping. We are currently in the process of redesigning our In-Room Dining menus and those should be available in the guestrooms shortly. Thank you for your insights regarding the guestrooms, these comments will be helpful in determining where renovation monies should be spent. Thank you again for your review and we do hope that you will allow us the opportunity to show you what a stay at the Palace Hotel should feel like.

“Fabulous Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

We have stayed at many different high end SF chain hotels, but we keep going back to the Palace--most recently for six nights in January 2013. It is centrally located with easy access to shopping, tourist sites, and restaurants. We were attending a conference at the hotel which included conference meals. The food was fabulous. No rubber chicken here. Our hotel room was very comfortable. We took advantage of the exercise facilities, pool, and sauna--all very nice. The staff at the hotel were very well trained, polite, and helpful. We also had their Sunday Brunch with live jazz. It is the best brunch in San Francisco and is well worth the price. Actually it is one of the best in the world, literally, as we travel extensively. Also, if you get the chance, take the free SF Cityguides Tour of the hotel which covers its rich history. The hotel is updated but has maintained the feel of old elegance.

Room Tip: If you use exercise facilities, take a room on the 4th floor for easy access.
