“Beautiful Historic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

We stayed from 4 nights, and had not issues whatsoever with the hotel. The hotel is wonderfully maintained and the restaurant is breathtaking. Staff were extremely courteous and we most appreciated our room being service promptly every day and never having to call housekeeping for something they forgot. It has a great location for any direction you want to travel in the city. The hotel has the total feel of being a palace from the moment you walk in the door. Only downside to the trip had nothing to do with the hotel, but the city itself. I would have never expected to need a winter coat in the middle of July. It's too cold to go out at night, (especially walking), so check the bar out. It's a fun place.

Room Tip: Sorry, I don't have a tip, since our room was perfect and I have nothing to compare to.

A grand palace, indeed! The entry is impressive, although registration is not so easy to find when you first walk in. You walk in to the beautiful flower arrangement in the grand entry and the garden restaurant beyond the entry, which is beautiful. To the right was the registration area and to the left was the concierge station. The place has a rich history and beautiful architecture. The three rooms from the group I was with were all very nice. Mine was spacious and I found that I was actually in a handicap room. One couple had breakfast in the garden restaurant downstairs and paid $40 for two people having oatmeal, juice and coffee. I opted for a block walk to Starbuck's (there are other places nearby also, but it was close) for a grab and go breakfast and then I went down for free coffee and took it back to my room. I noticed many others doing the same thing and having their coffee in the lobby areas!

Thank you for taking the share your review. Did you know that there are 12 dozen roses in the lobby flower arrangement? We are so delighted to hear that you enjoyed the entrance and were amazed by the beautiful architecture and general hotel décor. Thank you for your insights regarding the guest check-in, I have forwarded your comments to our Executive team. Thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon!

We stayed here for 2 nights (using points) before moving to another hotel. We arrived there quite late (10pm) but still got upgraded to a bigger room. Beds were comfortable, room large, convenient location. Only negative was that the bathroom was pretty small, and the bathtub/shower didn't drain properly.

I was a bit leery of staying here because of bad reviews about the rooms, staff etc. All I have to say is this was THE BEST stay I have ever had in SF. My previous stays were at Westin St. Francis (awful) and Westin Market Street which was nice. The staff at the The Palace were friendly, made me feel welcomed from beginning to end and looked after every need I had with pleasure. The room we ended up getting was a beautiful and large one bedroom suite with separate living area. I did notice that some of the furniture was a bit nicked and maybe needed refurbishment or replacement but other than that the room was spotless and wonderfully maintained. I was glad to find out for myself that some of the complaints about the hotel and rooms were without merit. This is a historic (old) building and expect some features of the hotel to be such. If you want a modern, state of the art hotel, stay somewhere else. For those who appreciate old world charm and class don't go anywhere else!

The hotel is in an excellent location with BART station right outside. The hotel has a wonderful restaurant in a beautiful dining room. There is also a fitness center and a pool, which is rare downtown.

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT facing the interior.

Just a marvelous old place with an excellent, friendly staff, a beautiful restaurant and a fine location for business or shopping.

Room Tip: rooms on lower floors overlooking market or montgomery can be noisey. Ask the front desk for a quiet...

Just stayed at the Palace this past weekend and it was great. They gave us an early check in at about 9:30 a.m., and the room was nearly perfect... not small, like many say - no problems at all with the beds (i.e., perfectly comfortable), bathroom was very well appointed and nice. Regarding the hotel itself, the Pied Piper Lounge is a nice place to chill with a couple of beers before heading out on the town. Impecable service, there and the Garden Room is amazing (but we didn't eat there as it's too pricey). The location is great, just off the Montgomery street BART. As far as visiting San Francisco goes, this place is the nicest I've chosen. True, it's old, but it's amazingly well maintained and has great historic value.

Finally, if you want to slum it in the general vicinity, there's an equally old divey bar just across the street (King of Shields)...

We are always so delighted to read reviews from guests who experience all the hotel and local area have to offer! Thank you so much for your comments regarding the guestrooms! The Pied Piper Bar & Grill and The Garden Court are two of the esteemed restaurants we have here at the Palace and we are very grateful for your praise. Thank you for sharing our convenient location with our future global explorers. History Fact- The House of Shields across the street on New Montgomery actually holds the original bar that was in the Palace Hotel back from the prohibition era.

Lovely historic building, wonderful rooms, perfect (business) service.
A business hotel, yes - but in a very individual and personal way!
One of the most beautiful breakfast locations, and my personal highlight:
The always perfect gigantic bouquet of red roses in the lobby :-)
